Welcome to the third of our special Microguides. This week, following on from our guides to Wild and Cheap London, we turn our attention to the capital’s finest food and drink.
We hope you agree that we’ve uncovered some great places, but if your favourite is missing, please tell us in an e-mail to eatlondon@thetimes.co.uk.
With satellite navigation and mobile internet in mind, we have included full postcodes where possible.
WHY LONDONERS ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE
Not only do we have some of the world’s best restaurants on our doorstep, but home cooks have access to some of the best food suppliers on the planet. London’s great foodhalls are sensational, and no other city has anything like them.
Certainly, nowhere has anything like Harrods foodhall, one of the few suppliers which is also a tourist attraction in its own right. Dodge the camera-toting tourists, pick up some free samples of great cheese and treat yourself to a Hudson picnic hamper backpack (£85), then fill it with goodies to take to Hyde Park.
Down the road, Whole Foods offers something of a contrast, bringing a touch of American pizzazz to the worthy business of organic food.
If the Kensington crowds are too much, then the rarefied delights of Fortnum and Mason may be more to your liking. Great teas, relish and hampers (£40-£300) are the speciality, and the website has just had a relaunch. Delivery is priced at a reasonable £7.
Further north, the old guard of Selfridges continues to amaze with its range. Where else would sausages from Banger Bros sit comfortably alongside UK-sourced cooked food from Baker and Spice, and the chance to buy one of only 17 bottles of Louis XIII cognac to be imported into the UK (a snip at £20,000)? Selfridge’s has a new rival down the road, in the shape of John Lewis, which revamped its foodhall late last year to add a host of deli counters to its range of Waitrose favourites, at prices that won’t cause you sleepless nights.
