Attend an evening with Andre Agassi
The sheer awfulness of this show comes as all the more of a surprise, since I genuinely admired the double-act the last time I saw them. An ingenious combination of avant-garde theatre and comic timing, their previous production had its self-indulgent, undergrad moments but still managed to be genuinely witty. This time, alas, the wit has gone out of the window, along with anything resembling an interesting idea.
What we get instead, as we watch the pair contemplating the end of their partnership, is a series of arbitrary utterances and vignettes, some played out onstage, others shown on a video screen. Kim Noble (the tall, ginger one) spends most of the hour jogging on a treadmill; Stuart Silver (small and feminine) hands out sandwiches and plays chess with a member of the audience. As the two men continue to talk across each other, transgressive images flicker on screen: a spider is killed in close-up, the duo’s parents and unsuspecting members of the public are ridiculed and abused; Kim Noble urinates into his own mouth while taking a bath. Very Gilbert and George, in other words.
It’s possible to while away a few minutes pondering how the more embarrassing scenes were staged. Could that really be Noble’s soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend who is surreptitiously filmed during a heart-to-heart conversation? But do you care one way or the other? Not really. There is no point trying to be shocked either; the alienation effects are all too boring for that.
If you have sado-masochistic tendencies and a lingering affection for Britart, then by all means inflict the show on yourself. The Soho Theatre is charging £15 for this embarrassment.
