A fan has accused rapper Snoop Dogg and his security team of beating him and taking his diamond earrings during a concert in the Seattle suburbs on Saturday night.
Richard Monroe, 24, said he was invited onstage at the performance, which also featured artists The Game and Oowee at the White River Amphitheater in Auburn, Washington, but was then attacked by Snoop Dogg and his entourage.
"They just beat me, stomping me, and beat me with a microphone," said Monroe, who was treated at a local hospital for a broken nose and bruising to his face and ribs. "They took my diamond earrings off my ear, my jewellery off my fingers, they took my wallet and my cell phone," he told a local television station.
The incident was captured on home video, which appears to show Monroe onstage, tapping Snoop Dogg on the shoulder before a fight erupted, drawing in the singer's bodyguards. From the video, it is unclear whether the rapper, who was giving a performance of his song "Gin and Juice" was directly involved.
Police investigating the altercation say that Snoop Dogg, who was named yesterday as a performer in Sir Bob Geldof's Live 8 concerts, was slightly hurt during the fight. "This Snoop Dogg character fell and injured his thumb," Deputy Travis DeFries, a spokesman from the King County Sheriff's Office told the Seattle Times. "He was treated on the scene."
Yesterday, Snoop Dogg's publicist Meredith O’Sullivan issued a statement: "Any person who jumps onstage at a concert has to be interpreted as a security threat and an immediate risk to both the performers onstage as well as the fans in the audience. Once a breach of security has been made, authorities are forced to take the proper measures to ensure safety."
