An immense treasury of images is to be found at New York Public Library’s Digital Gallery. More than 363,000 images have been digitised from its collection of vintage maps, posters, photographs, sheet music covers and other printed rarities. Sections such as Culture and Society yield, for instance, collections of Native American portraiture spanning 400 years, Japanese woodcuts by Kitagawa Utamoro and English theatrical portraits from 1799 to 1847. All are free to download, as long as it is for personal use. Our own British arts and archive institutions would do well to follow its ambitious example.

A pianist, journalist and author of biographies on Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Gabriel Fauré, Jessica Duchen may be the best blogger on the subject of classical music. Everything she writes is worth reading, whether it is the confession from the Last Night of the Proms that she gets a lump in her throat from watching 6,000 people “loving every moment of a piece by Elgar” or her refusal to convert to pop music because of the deafening volume of gigs.

The London Musicians’ Collective bring you podcast specials featuring concerts from the LSO St Luke’s, while the comedian Kevin Eldon delivers a series of wonderfully amusing monologues and lectures.
