Win 100 iconic DVDs
This art fair, founded only four years ago, has soared from strength to strength. Last year £33 million changed hands. This year 150 international galleries have competed to win a stand. And they don’t come just from the familiar cultural capitals, but also from places such as Cairo, São Paulo and Beirut.
For one giddy weekend the London art world goes global. You can see the best that our galleries have to offer as they engage in some intensely competitive window-dressing. Frieze spawns a host of satellite events. Pop into “Zoo”, for example, near the main site in Regent’s Park, to see the work of the younger, less established artists.
But the principal focus of Frieze is the main site, where eager gallerists set out their stalls with their most eye-catching wares. Here is anything from Conrad Shawcross’s kinetic sculpture twirling its lights like a cheerleader’s baton to the “nanosculptures” of Loris Gréaud and DGZ Research, invisible to the naked eye.
You will find all the big names of the contemporary art world, but there is plenty to surprise, too. Here is an unmade bed — but there is someone asleep in it. There is an installation oozing a slurry of peanut butter. Step into that studio and, if you hand over £4,000, you can have the Chapman brothers paint your portrait. Or book in a hair consultation with Lady Grace, the richly tressed star of a mesmerising video by the Cartier Prize winner Mika Rottenberg.
Look out for art in unexpected places: for the bloodsucking mosquitoes that have alighted on a wall; for Gregor Schneider’s scary high-security cell behind its sliding door; and for Mike Nelson’s labyrinth. Only the intrepid — or nosy — will find the latter. Between F4 and F5 is the clue.
What are the trends? Video is out, which means that those works that do make it are good. Watch Mark Wallinger’s flies crawling up a windowpane or Suzanne Bürner’s collaged scenes of mass hysteria. Photography is on the wane, but sculpture is definitely back — although don’t think bronze: think of clap-trap clutter, mixed-media assemblages of plastic, wood, mirrors and lace.
