The Spunk bootlegs album is rereleased in new packaging on July 17. Packaging
is the operative word: the crucial thing Lydon, McLaren and co understood
was that, to detonate a depth charge beneath the Establishment, they had to
get every aspect right. That the band wrote killer tunes only increased the
explosion. We’re still feeling its effects.
1 Anarchy in the UK Two of the greatest guitar breaks ever, a
vocal of unconcealed menace and a lyric that’s pure Pistols, snarling and
ribald.
2 Pretty Vacant The intro alone makes this a classic.
3 Bodies Pauline, the schizophrenic “girl from Birmingham”,
inspires one of Lydon’s most vituperative vocals.
4 God Save the Queen The trick was to slip this on at jubilee
street parties in place of the national anthem.
5 Holidays in the Sun “A cheap holiday in other people’s
misery” — Lydon waxes lyrical at the Berlin wall.
6 EMI The band’s first label, which dropped them pronto, gets
it in the neck.
7 (I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone An inspired
cover, and a treasure chest they raided more than once.
8 No Fun Ditto this torn-through cover of a crucial song from
the Stooges’ back pages.
9 Did You No Wrong A key but overlooked track, B-side to God
Save the Queen.
10 Nookie The most hair-raising of the Anarchy demos.
