A photographic guide to abandoned shopping trolleys has beaten the mountain women of Daghestan to win the most eclectic literary prize of the year.
The Diagram Prize, run in conjunction with The Bookseller magazine, rewards the oddest book title of the year.
More than 5,500 members of the public voted, with 1,866 of them backing The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America: A Guide to Field Identification. The book took Julian Montague, an artist based in New York, six years to complete. “The content is utterly irrelevant,” Joel Rickett, deputy editor of The Bookseller, said.
Second was Tattooed Mountain Women and Spoon Boxes of Daghestan, with Better Never To Have Been: The Harm of Coming Into Existence third.

A fascinating read, right up there with the Audubon Society's Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, but not quite as handy for the pocket of the serious shopping trolly hunter. When will the European edition be published?
