1. Douglas: Built along a great sweeping bay, gateway to the fascinating “abroadness” of the Isle of Man.
2. Grange-over-Sands: The perfect old-fashioned resort: not much sand but lots of quiet Cumbrian class.
3. Llandudno: Unmatched seaside architecture and a stunning position.
4. Saltburn: Small and charming Yorkshire clifftop resort that never quite took off.
5. Scarborough: The first and in many ways still the best resort: earthy, soul-lifting, castle, gardens, harbour, always on the move.
6. Southport: Gracious, upmarket, with glorious arcades and a peer of piers.
7. Southwold: A 1950s Ladybird resort in aspic: a tad twee but reassuring.
8. Torquay: Big-scale seaside admirably reinventing itself for the 21st century.
9. Weymouth: Most elegant of promenades, like Bath-by-the-Sea, with lively maritime atmosphere.
10. Whitby: Endless historical fascination: abbey, astonishing church, and still a real no-nonsense place.

We`ve just stumbled across Grange-over-Sands whilst on a trip to the Lake District. What an absolute gem! Had lunch at a superb hotel over-looking the Bay in glorious autumn weather with a stunning view of the town. Followed by shopping with a difference. Not a High Street chainstore in sight! This is definitely a place for people who don`t want to follow the crowd.

There is only one really great seaside town which has it all - Brighton. Something for everyone and constantly changing whilst still retaining it's seaside feel.
