1. Heating

Get used to shivering like we did in the austere, un-centrally heated 1950s and you’ll soon put a major dent in your carbon footprint. Insulate your house to the max and you can stay warm for less. Coal fires stoked up in every room will make sure you heat goes straight through the roof.

2. Bathing

All that heating of vast quantities of drinking-quality water is no good for the planet, so do Gaia a favour and jump in a river. Very bracing. Sharing a bath halves its environmental impact and can be very entertaining. Head for a solo soak in a colossal jacuzzi if you want a bath that really bashes the biosphere.

3. Clothes

The eco-impact of clothes is mostly in how you wash them. So keeping your (second-hand, naturally) threads filthy is great for the planet, if not your friends. Clothes made from materials like hemp are quite green, but sparkly clean white cotton ticks all the wrong boxes: cotton is the world’s most-sprayed crop, guzzles water and uses loads of water and energy to keep that pristine finish.
