Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton
As long as it’s not a shared gas-guzzler, sharing is best. Two people in a car halves its CO2 per kilometre rating, and so on. Hybrids offer slightly more eco-friendly motoring. Much as environmentalists might like to bash 4x4s, usage is the key to automotive eco-devastation, so many miles in a Mondeo is worse than short trips in a Shogun.
5. Drinking water

Yes, tap water contains chemicals. But so does life. ‘Corporation pop’ has (in the UK, anyway) a well-perfected distribution system that uses minimal energy per person to create clean and mostly tasty water. Harvested rainwater is very groovy but takes a lot of energy to make it clean enough to drink. Pointlessly shipping water halfway round the world ought to be the subject of a Hague tribunal rather than breathless magazine articles.
6. Chicken

Keeping your own is good for the garden but you’ll need acres to support the average British chicken habit. Because the life of intensively reared birds is so horribly crammed and short, they need less food and space so are, ironically, a little bit green. The chicken in your curry could have come from, well, anywhere.
7. Travel

No serious greenie is going to step on a plane these days. Even if it might take days or weeks rather than hours, a ridiculously complex train journey is better for the planet than a long-haul flight. Packed low-cost flights emit less CO2 per passenger – but if you really want to give the planet a good kicking, private jets pick up where Concorde left off for fuel consumption per passenger.
