She dries the bowls, pours me some cereal and milk and looks at me long and hard, like I’m something she’s thinking of buying, then sits next to me and draws circles in a pool of spilt sugar.
"I’m not saying you’ve got to do it mind, it was Ron’s idea. I said I don’t know, Ronnie, she might not like it, but he’s been a good friend, I owe him a favour."
"What the heck’ve you signed me up for, Mum?"
"You’ll be fine, once you’ve learned the ropes - "
High wire artist? Surely not?
"Just tell me!"
She gulps her coffee and makes a face. "Did you sugar this?"
I glare at her.
"All right," she says. "There’s this guy - Jake Dylan - and his assistant’s let him down, got herself a new job last minute."
"It’s a snake charmer, isn’t it?"
Mum laughs. "Jake’s an escapologist." She pauses. "Don’t look so horrified, pet - you don’t have to do a lot, just look glam, tie his straitjacket, draw a few curtains, that sort of thing. Lovely little outfit, too, black sequins. Look dinky on you."
My tongue dries so quickly that I can’t swallow my cornflakes. My mouth feels like it’s full of moths. Mum clasps my wrist.
"Self-doubt’s a woman’s biggest enemy, Leila. If you think you can do it, you can. Go for it, girl, what’ve you got to lose? You’ll love it, I know you will, it’s in your blood."

This is my favourite of the extracts I have read and I agree with Kate's comment that 'It's like the books that famous authors would write."
With just a few words Frances has drawn a rich and immediate picture of this mother and daughter and their interaction. It's full of humour and immediacy and i love the mouth full of moths!
Caroline Beaumont, Marston, UK
Frances has taken a fresh angle here : a role reversal - Mum trying to persuade Leila to join the circus - I'd love to know what Mum's motives are! super dialogue - I can hear this conversation.
Excellent, and good luck Frances.
MG, Norton,
A story that will readily appeal to young readers, especially as Frances' dialogue is so true to life! A natural writer who deserves to win this competition.
Alison Thomas, Knighton, Powys
I really like this extract - I like the use of the present tense. it makes the story very immediate.and pulls you straight into the action . The characters are very well done, and the setting - an end of pier show - sounds like great fun, too. I would really enjoy reading this book, and hope I get the chance to do so. It's one I'm sure my daughter would love to read too. Best of luck Frances!
Patricia, bedford, bedfordshire
I really like this extract - it makes me want to read more. it's just the kind of book I would love to read. It's like the books that famous authors would write, but it's always nice to find new, inspiring authors. I am 11 and I love reading.
