My out and out favourite is the English Patient by Michael Ondaatje, for its simple yet devastating descriptive prose, intriguing characters and a story well told
Anne O'Meara, Johannesburg, South Africa
How late it was, how late by james Kelman- the champion of champions
graham grest, swansea,
Brookner & Ishiguro are the only writers in the list with real literary value ; and how come Pym never got it ? don't answer me, I know...
pierre, brussels, belgium
My vote goes to byatt's Possession for its beauty of language and structure. Close second would be Midnight's Children and third would be Life of Pi. all 3 wonderfully written and inventive.
Katherine Waters, montreal, quebec, canada
AMSTERDAM.
Well written; Readable; No need to keep going to dictionaries or deciphering exotic names; dishes; customs & the usual unfathomable tosh being ground out to satisfy the political correctnness of judges , too timid to propose & vote for a "Good Read".
No. 1: AMSTERDAM.
MR. MYLES STANISTREET, NERAC, FRANCE
I agree entirely. "Possession" certainly deserves to be the Booker of Bookers, not merely for its erudition and plotting but also for the staggering quality of the variety of writing, both prose and verse, in it.
Peter Harding, Sleaford, Lincs
A.S. Byatt's "Possession" is beautifully written, has intricate plotting and great erudition. All that victorian poetry - how did she do it? It's a demanding read and a great book.
