Michael Fassbender, the actor best known for portraying the IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands in Hunger, has been nominated for a Bafta award designed to predict future film stars.
The shortlist for the Bafta Rising Star Award also included Noel Clarke, the director and star of Adulthood, and Rebecca Hall, who appeared in Woody Allen’s latest film, Vicky Christina Barcelona, and Frost/Nixon.
Michael Cera, best known for his performance in Juno, and who also starred in Superbadand Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and Toby Kebbell, who appeared in Control and Dead Man’s Shoes, complete the list.
The award, for those who are establishing themselves, is the only one at the Orange British Academy Film Awards to be voted for by the British public. A jury including the actors James McAvoy and Kelly Macdonald selected the five nominees from recommendations by the film industry and Bafta members.
The nominations were announced at Bafta headquarters in London by last year’s winner, Shia LaBeouf, who was speaking by video link.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on February 8.
