The legendary director Francis Ford Coppola enlisted a gallery of heavyweight talents when he took on this conventional — certainly by his standards — Hollywood fare. A cynical morality tale pitting a rookie lawyer (Matt Damon) and his ramshackle associates against an arrogant corporate legal team, this John Grisham tale is one of the author’s more involving ones and is beautifully filmed by Coppola. Besides a classy ensemble cast that includes Danny DeVito, Jon Voight, Danny Glover and Claire Danes, Coppola is also reunited with his Rumble Fish star Mickey Rourke and the Apocalypse Now co-writer Michael Herr. HANNIE CAULDER (1971)
ITV4, 9.30pm
The knockabout comic elements of this vintage western strike a somewhat distasteful note, given that Raquel Welch’s heroine is a former rape victim bent on vengeance against the bank-robbing brothers who assaulted her and killed her husband. Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin and Jack Elam co-star as the bickering, clownish villains while Robert Culp plays Welch’s gun-slinging mentor. If you can stomach the ill-judged comedy and oddly illogical ending, the director Burt Kennedy delivers plenty of solid action, while Christopher Lee pops up in a rare western role. (85 min)
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S (1961)
ITV3, 10.10pm
Audrey Hepburn reached her career peak as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, although she only got the role after after Marilyn Monroe dropped out (her drama coach warned her that playing a high-class call girl could taint her screen image). Directed by the future Pink Panther series creator Blake Edwards, Truman Capote’s brittle novella about Manhattan’s bright young things is more sweet than sour. A dapper George Peppard co-stars as Holly’s neighbour, a gigolo and would-be writer. Winning Oscars for its score and evergreen theme song Moon River, Capote’s gossip journal becomes a classic fairytale of New York on screen. (115 min)
