Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey said last night that he no longer cared about his cinema career.
The star of American Beauty and The Usual Suspects told London Tonight he loved his role as artistic director of London's Old Vic theatre, a position he has held since 2003.
"I don't care about my personal acting career any more. I'm done with it," he said.
"After 10 years of making movies and going better than I ever could have imagined, I sort of had to ask myself: What am I supposed to do with all of this success that I have had?
"Am I just going to keep making movie after movie and be concerned with all of that 'Are you up, are you down, are you hot, are you not?', and I don't really care.
"What I care about is working with people, what I care about is the remarkable experience of being able to be a part of bringing people together."
Spacey, who won an Oscar for his role in the Sam Mendes-directed American Beauty, has acted in a number of productions at the Old Vic, including Richard II and Moon For The Misbegotten.
The theatre's 2007-08 season sees the artistic director taking a lead role in David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, while Mendes will be directing The Tempest and Hamlet.
The season also includes Victorian thriller Gaslight, All About My Mother, based on the film by Pedro Almodovar and the Old Vic panto Cinderella, penned by actor and comedian Stephen Fry.

I can say that I understand as we mature that we tend to evolve and become seasoned with life. Our decisions, hopes, dreams and aspirations once obtained, become nothing more than a learning experience introducing us to the next chapter in our lives. We owe respect our past but not restriction.

I am sad about your decision but do respect your decision because if theatre make you happy, go for it. I am deaf and I throughly enjoyed your films with closed captioned over the years. I rarely write anything that I admire but you are one of the few people that always put a smile on my face. Please remember do not disregard your artistic gifts in films and do count your blessings if you are offer another opportunity in movies some day. If you are happy with your life right now, then I am happy for you. Truly yours and may God bless you.

Kevin Spacey is a very talented actor. Yes, a few of movies have tanked at the box office, but that doesn't diminish his abilities. His portrayal as Lex Luthor was pretty darn good, for one.
I think his career started to sink a bit, when he came out with that Bobby Darin movie. It seemed to be more about Kevin's impersonation of Bobby, than about Bobby himself.
If he wants to give movies a rest, than so be it. I don't think however, he'll be gone from the silver screen for too long. It's not because I think he's being disingenuine about it, I think he's most likely very frustrated with that aspect of his career, and wants to do something he feels is more rewarding. If he starts making films again, so much the better for those of us who've enjoyed his past performances.
Jeff Pfeiffer, Columbus, Ohio/ United States
Not to be cynical, but just wait until he's offered an obscene amount of money to play Lex Luthor again. Then perhaps his career interest will re-kindle.
Richard, Long Beach , California
Spacey says these things because his last few films have tanked - he can't open a film to save himself! Now that he has stopped going to the parks after midnight, London seems to agree with him. Or could it be that this past season at the Old Vic was not as bad as the prior seasons?
Garry, Lonfon, UK
I am very saddened that Kevin is giving up acting. Such a talent. I can see where he's coming from though. He's got both a Supporting Oscar (for The Usual Suspects) and the Best Oscar (for American Beauty)...can't top that! He LOVES to act on stage and sounds completly fulfilled by his running London's Old Vic.
As long as he drops in on David Letterman once in a while, I guess I can 'cope'. Luv ya Kevin!!!!
Joan Lee, Lowell, MA
I hope he keeps his options open, if a good film is offered! I would not be able to see him in the theatre & miss seeing him in films!

It is a wonderfull thing to be able to do what you love to do and in which you are very good at it. We will miss him on the "silver screen" though. Bon Chance
Richard Kahn, North Bergen, USA/NJ
Note: the headline is inaccurate. He didn't say he was giving up acting, he said he wasn't appearing in any more films.
Pegatha, Auburn, AL, USA
He's a marvelous actor, and will be missed. Sadly, too few of us will be able to see him on stage. I wish him great success and, while it's not difficult to understand this decision, I hope he keeps his mind and options open in case any actually good screen roles come his way.
