Mission Impossible 3 with Tom Cruise

After the conceptual marketing mess that was Grindhouse, old-style movie marketing gimmicks are about to get another makeover, this time from the writer-director J. J. Abrams ( Lost, Mission: Impossible III – pictured right). Next week, in an ingenious teaser campaign personally designed by the audience-savvy Abrams, the US release of the blockbuster Transformers will be accompanied by an intriguing, deliberately untitled trailer featuring a mysterious presence terrorising New York and destroying the Statue of Liberty. The trailer, designed to create a buzz among prospective audiences, is actually culled from Abrams’s new mid-budget sci-fi thriller Cloverfield, about a creature from the sea that attacks Manhattan. But, hey, you’re not supposed to know that!
