Voting has closed in the online competition to find a director for what MySpace, the social networking website, is calling “the world’s first user generated film.”
The winner, who will be revealed on Thursday, will be given £1 million by MySpace to produce a feature-length film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.
MySpace users have voted on three finalists, Tom Harper, Mat Kirkby and Vito Rocco, and the short examples of their filmmaking work they submitted.
The three had been handpicked from over 1,000 entries by a panel of film industry insiders including Sienna Miller, Andrew Macdonald and Nick Love.
Harper, 27, from Tufnel Park in London, entered Cubs, “a gripping and fast-paced short about a young boy’s rite of passage, set against the unique backdrop of an urban fox hunt.
Kirkby, 32, from the East End of London, entered Hard to Swallow, “a dark comedy about a dysfunctional group of friends getting together for a meal and the mayhem that ensues.”
Rocco, 35, from Islington in London, made Goodbye Cruel World, “another dark comedy about the relationship between a young boy and an elderly man in his care.”
MySpace is by far the world’s largest web community, with 180 million users worldwide, with more than 10 million in the UK alone.
Its plan is to give this community democratic input into every aspect of the film’s production, from online script-writing meetings and casting by webcam to editing forums for the film’s trailer.
