Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg is expected to star in the next Star Trek movie.
The 25 year old film franchise, which began ten years after the original television series was cancelled in the US, has enjoyed solid but not spectacular success, with the action-packed time travel adventure Star Trek: First Contact a high water mark with a gross in the region of $150m.
With the budget for the eleventh film already projected to be more than $160m, producers Paramount are evidently hoping to entice a far wider audience than Star Trek's devoted core fanbase.
The last Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Nemesis, has been poorest performer of the series so far with a somewhat disappointing $67 million yield at the box office.
The next outing for the crew of the Enterprise represents a complete reboot of the series, with characters from the 1960s series being played by a new cast which is expected to include Pegg as the irascible Linlithgow engineer Montgomery Scott.
Other stars include Eric Bana, as the principal villain of the piece, and Heroes favourite Zachary Quinto as a young Mr. Spock.

Pegg is the only actor I actually know of. I never got time to watch Heroes or Alias or any films or TV that any of the others have been in. But I've been a fan of Simon Pegg since he first started to do minor skits in The Saturday Night Armistice back in the early 1990s.
Being the editor of a blog on the new movie I've seen alot of behind-the-scenes photos of props, sets and uniforms and they all seem to be excellant and very original. I wouldnt believe anyone, anywhere who says they know anything about the script. Pegg read it under guard and Paramount has a trick on making each copy of any script uniquely indentifiable so traces leaks.
So far I'm impressed with this 're-imagining' - I just hope J.J. Abrams stays the course and doesnt make this too comedic or too cerebral.

Star Trek fans need to suck it up. Your original cast is old. They are not going to be around to play in a movie. The first six movies were great, with a great cast, but that is no more. The Next Generagion cast is also aging. If you want your children and your children's children to have a life with Star Trek you have to give hollywood a chance. Star Trek must be done outside the box. I don't know if having new people play old characters is the best idea, but hey, it's something new. I think it will be fun and interesting, and I a true non-subborn fan will watch it. Perhaps, though, Star Trek needs something totally different. Maybe a new ship, and a new crew, maybe continuing where Nemesis left off or even in the future like TNG did. For now I will watch my reruns, but I am waitng to support something new. The fans killed "Enterprise," with their lack of support. A new series and movie will need support from the fans before it can catch those who are new to the legacy.

While Simon Pegg is a great actor and I loved 'Hot Fuzz' he IS NOT Scotty by any stretch of the imagination. In fact he couldn't be further away from right both in physical resembelence to the character and acting style. Like many fans I look at him and I dont see the character but I can when I look at Paul McGillion (Stargate: Atlantis) who was also up for the role and bares an uncanny resembelence, is actually Scottish (the casting sheet called for a 'flawless' accent, I've only seen Pegg do a far from Flawless version) and has many of the right sensibilities within his acting style to do justice to the part.
Typical Hollywood, casting the 'Brit Flavour' of the month actor.

Its great that Eric Bana is in it, I hope he has a chance to show of his comedic talents. As for Zachery Quinto, he looks nothing like a young Spock. Simon Pegg will be a good addition, loved him in Hot Fuzz though how they're going to use him is anybodys guess. I hope Abhrams doesn't stuff this one up- anybody remember that show about those people stuck on an island

Hollywood execs are lost in their own little world. The core Star Trek fans will most likely boycott the movie and the reason why the general populace didn't frequent the previous 2 movies will remain the same - bad script equals no box office.

This is the best news to hit the Star Trek scene ever - Unless they are thinking of using SPIZZENERGI's "Where's CAptain Kirk?" or "Spock's Missing" in the film that would be sensational news.

I think it will be a refreshing change, Simon Pegg is awesome!
