The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

Do you agree with James Christopher? Share your opinion on which films, actors and directors should be winning awards at the bottom of the page
The ceremony’s off but the Golden Globes are still handed out in LA on Sunday night. The Baftas follow on February 10, but they will be eclipsed by the Oscars on February 24. Here are my predictions.
Best Picture
There Will Be Blood: Golden Globe, and Oscar. A brilliant American parable about oil, guilt, and greed. Atonement should win the Bafta.
Best Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis: Golden Globe and Bafta. He is magnificent in There Will Be Blood. Strategic voting will gift Brad Pitt the Oscar for his silky menace in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Best Actress
Keira Knightley will pip Helena Bonham Carter to the Bafta. But Angelina Jolie (A Mighty Heart) will trump both rivals by winning the Golden Globe and the Oscar.
Best Director
The Coen brothers: Golden Globe, Oscar and Bafta for their macabre thriller No Country for Old Men.
Best Musical
Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd will clean up.
Best Picture in a Foreign Language
The East German masterpiece The Lives of Others will lift the Bafta. It’s not in contention for the Golden Globe or the Oscar. The Kite Runner will take both.

I can't believe Denzel Washington didn't get nominated for ' American Gangster. oh well, I think Daniel Day Lewis will win and Kiera Knightley. There Will Be Blood will blow us away!
Jesse Pearce, Biloela, QLD, Australia
It was ridiculous that Knightly got nominated last time - she can't act to save her life- all she does is pout. If she (or Jolie for that matter) wins this time it will be a joke.
No Country For Old men all the way - one of the best, most intelligent films I have ever seen.
Jane, CA,
Hahahahahahahahahaha, you're the worst I've ever seen. Jolie? Gimme a break. She wasn't even good enough to get nominated, which I said after seeing the film.
Oh, and Des Brown, it's Amy Ryan--but you're right about that race.
Supporting Actor is NOT hard. Bardem's Oscar.
Actress is Cotillard vs. Christie vs. Page vs. Linney. Blanchett is a lame duck in lead, but frontrunner in supporting.
By the way, James, you dolt: The Kite Runner was not even eligible in the category. It's a US co-production.
James De Roxtra, Roselle Park, New Jersey
Daniel Day Lewis and Marion Cottilard will win. Old Country will win best movie, but There Will Be Blood should win.
david, lake forest, ca
I've just seen Atonement and I don't think it should win anything.

The Oscars
Best Film: Either 'Atonement' or 'No Country for Old Men'. 'Atonement' doesn't have a Best Director nomination and no fim without a Best Director nomination was won since 'Driving Miss Daisy' in 1989. However, it's on release in the US and doing well at the box office.
Best Director. The Coens for 'No Country for Old Men'
Best Actor. Daniel Day Lewis has scooped most of the pre Oscar awards for 'No Country for Old Men', but don't rule out Johnny Depp for 'Sweeney Todd.'
Best Actress. A sure fire Oscar for Julie Christie in 'Away From Her'
Best Supporting Actor. The hardest category to predict, in the past it's thrown up some unexpected and unusual choices.
Best Supporting Actress. A two horse race between Cate Blanchett for 'I'm Not There' and Amy Evans for 'Gone Baby Gone'. These two have won all of of the pre-Oscar awards and whoever wins the SGA awards in this category will probably go on to win the Oscar,
Des Brown, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England
Kiera Knightley gave a poor performance in Atonement. Can't understand why she got nominated by the GGs.
dc, Vancouver, Canada
I continue to be amazed by James McAvoy and would love to see him win the Bafta for best actor.
Lyndsey , Boston, USA
Keira Knightley just juts out her chin and looks very pleased with herself - nothing remarkable about that. I really cannot understand what people see in her.
The still luminous Julie Christie is in a different class all together and should scoop all the best actress awards - she is simply brilliant .
Jane Palmer, Reading, Berks
Marion Cotillard's performance in La Vie en Rose is just wonderful - in a different league to the other nominees for Best Actress in the BAFTAS.
The Lives of Others and The Kite Runner also deserve high praise but will probably lose out to bland fare such as Atonement.
And finally, Kelly Macdonald in 'No Country for Old Men'...I know she's British, but don't you need to spend longer than 4 minutes in a film to win Best Supporting Actress BAFTA?
Olivia Dale, London, UK
Keira and James were both excellent. But it will be the wonderful Julie Christie who will scoop the awards.
Ben, London, Britain
Keira Knightley's performance in Atonement was totally wooden. She pouted or looked sullen to appear aloof but conveyed no inner spark. If only Natalie Portman had been given the role!!!
PJ, Montreal, Quebec
Yes, I agree, James McAvoy has my vote. He is a dynamic and instinctive actor. A creative force to be reckoned with who propped up " clothes horse" Knightley throughout.
PJ, Montreal, Quebec
i think that James McAvoy will win best actor, he gave a remarkable performance in atonement, and he has previously in all things he has been in! I think that he is the most talented actor around.
Teresa, London, UK
So much for predictions Mystic Meg.
Marc, St. Barths,
Keira Knightly's performance in the tedious Atonement is dull in the extreme, surely she cannot win an Oscar for this??!!
Andrew, London, UK
Apart from the people involved in the film, who actually cares? The TV audience will be watching to see the 'celebrities', the award givers (if there are any ceremonies) will only be there because of the great, big, expensive goody bags, and the media will be there to criticise the dresses of the women.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
Mike N, the article is about the BAFTAs as well as the Oscars and the Globes. The writer is merely pointing out that although The Lives of Others is not in contention for an Oscar or a Globe this year, it will probably take the 2008 BAFTA due to the differing qualification rules for those Awards. Also, Lou, Jolie was indeed absent from A Mighty Wind, it being a completely different film to A Mighty Heart.
Please read the article before commenting!
Peter, Cumbria, UK
despite not being eligible this year, the live of others is no "east german" production anyway. its about life in the former GDR but its produced and directed by west germans and methinks you can really feel that while seeing that film. overrated.
next to this the author should really make some more obversation about the awards race before posting these predictions. Julie Christie has won almost every precusor award for Away from Her and I am sure BAFTA, with her being one of their own, will recognize her as well - only Marion Cottillard could actually give her a run for the money as Edith Piaf. Angelina Jolie, Ellen Page and Cate Blanchett will be oscar nominated but only Page seems to have a shot at winning as well.
I doubt either Knightley or Bonham Carter will even receive a BAFTA nomination, they failed to garner a single awards mention besides both one from the Golden Globes, which do not reflect the voting behaviour of Academy members in anyway.
herman russ, La France, La France
I don't remember Jolie in Chris Guest's film. Get your facts straight before publishing, please.
Lou, McAllen, Texas
Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) of course is not in contention for the Oscars 2008 as it won Best Foreign Language Film last year!
Anon, London,
Unless this is a parody or your movie critic is on drugs, you should consider firing this guy. The Lives of Others ACTUALLY TOOK an Oscar, but last year.
Mike N., Toronto, Canada
