Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett has given birth to her third child, and surprised fellow antipodeans by announcing she will be back at work in six days time.
The Australian star of Elizabeth delivered a 3.6kg baby boy, named Ignatius Martin Upton, on Sunday in Sydney.
Today, the actress surprised Australians with the news she plans to honour a commitment to chair a government summit on the arts which starts on Saturday.
Congratulating the 38-year-old actress today, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced Blanchett had asked for a co-chair but would still travel from Sydney to Canberra to participate in the summit this weekend.
“I want to extend my best wishes to Ms Blanchett and her family and thank her for her contribution to the Australia 2020 Summit thus far.
“Ms Blanchett has indicated that she will continue to participate in the 2020 Summit in her role as a co-chair of the Creative Australia panel.”
Blanchett and her playwright husband, Andrew Upton, already have two sons - Dashiell, 6, and Roman, 3.
A spokesman for the Sydney Theatre Company, where the couple are joint artistic directors, told Australian journalists: "All are well and very happy."
Last year, the actress, who won an Oscar for The Aviator, spoke to The Times of her desire for more children.
“I feel completely and utterly expanded by being a mother. And yes there are compromises and things that one can't do, but there are a lot of things that one can do and I just find them hilarious and wonderful.
“And it's a cliché, but it's true, the reserves of feeling that one finds for them is limitless. You think, ‘I have one, how could I find any more love for a second one?' and you do.”
As well as winning the Best Actress Oscar in 2005, Blanchett has been nominated by the Academy for her roles in I’m Not There, Notes on a Scandel, and Elizabeth and its sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

Every human on Earth is the result of a pregnancy so why is this person so different? Why do you fill a quality newspaper with such drivel about a woman who is adding to the population explosion by reproducing more than two children and who gets paid a lot of money for play acting various characters- and not very well at that. Can't you fill the space with chit chat about someone who has contributed something important oe useful to society. Soon it will be difficult to distinguish The Times from Hello! Magazine.

I agree - Kate Blanchett made very little impression on me in 'The Queen'. But in fairness that's probably because she wasn't in it - you're thinking of Helen Mirren.
Oh, and she wasn't in 'Elisabeth' either (that's a 2005 Austrian movie). You should try watching 'Elizabeth' - she was cracking in that, and it's in English.

This is not newsworthy. However, commiserations to Cate Blanchett for missing time with her baby. So glad I am not her.

It seems strange to talk about wanting more children and then running back to work 6 days after giving birth. Does she want more kids, or does the nanny?

Kaz, I really think it's nobody's business what way Kate Blanchett chooses to rear her children. She never tried to show us mere mortals how to bring up kids, did she?
Amita, roles like hers may be boring for you, but they bring joy for millions, including me. Coronation Street or Spiderman are much better productions of course, but will you please let her live :)

What is this obsession people have with no sooner pushing out a baby before planning the next one. You have 3 children already, enough is enough. The world is groaning under the crush of people now. Even better, adopt a child if you want to but for God's sake give the earth a break.

Cate Blanchett is an overrated actress suitable for boring roles like the ones she is used to play in the Queen, Elisabeth and so on, in Babel she was overacted and really and truly don't see the fascination with her. She looks boring too.

yawn - yet another super "mum" showing us mere mortals how mothering should be done - NOT!!!!
