— Channel 4 is set to make a trilogy of films about the Yorkshire Ripper. Toni Grisoni has adapted the books of David Peace about the case and the films will be produced by Michael Winterbottom and Andrew Eaton’s Revolution Films. The three directors on board are Julian Jarrold, James Marsh and Anand Tucker; casting continues.

— Kate Hudson is following in her mother’s footsteps. The actress is rumoured to be reuniting with her collaborator Matthew McConaughey for a remake of the 1978 comedy Foul Play. The original version starred Hudson’s mother Goldie Hawn as a librarian and Chevy Chase as a cop: both get caught up in the chaotic investigation of an assassination attempt.

— The release of the Colombian presidential candidate Íngrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages held by Farc rebels may have only just been secured, but Hollywood is already desperate for the story. Variety reports a flurry of negotiations for book and film rights from both hostages and from the Colombian Government. With an eye on the strong female leading role, Julia Roberts’s production company has already expressed an interest in telling Betancourt’s story.
