Burn After Reading
The Coen brothers round up the usual suspects, George Clooney and Frances McDormand, plus Brad Pitt, John Malkovich and Tilda Swinton, for their return to comic territory: a yarn about a CIA agent whose sensitive memoirs go missing and turn up in the hands of two dodgy gym employees, who spot an entrepreneurial opportunity. The Rocker
Rainn Wilson, the loathsome Dwight from the American version of The Office, gets a lead role, after cameos in everything from Galaxy Quest to Juno. He plays a failed 1980s rock drummer given another chance when his nephew’s band, ADD, needs a percussionist. Directed by Peter (Full Monty) Cattaneo. Oct 17
Quantum of Solace
Marc Forster, director of Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland, is in charge of Bond’s latest extravaganza, which takes its title, though presumably not a lot else, from the sparse contents of a Bond short story. Daniel Craig is back in the tight trunks, ranged against Mathieu Amalric’s villain; this time it’s a life-and-death struggle for . . . water rights. A tad more promising than Tomorrow Never Dies’s life-and-death struggle over . . . media rights. But only just. Oct 31
Hunger
Artist Steve McQueen’s harrowing, Cannes award-winning study of the Maze hunger strikes in 1981, with Michael Fassbender on top form as IRA man Bobby Sands. Oct 31
Waltz with Bashir
Also in competition at Cannes, this anti-war film by Ari Folman is an “animated documentary”, an attempt by Folman to fill in the gaps in his memory from his time in the Israeli army in the early 1980s. His interviews with real participants and fellow soldiers are overlaid with often nightmarish animated images; what he recovers along the way are painful memories of what he witnessed in Lebanon. Body of Lies
Russell Crowe stars alongside that other Ridley Scott favourite, Leonardo DiCaprio, in the director’s latest, another bid at attracting mass audiences to a film about the war on terror. DiCaprio plays a CIA agent based in Jordan whose mission is to foment discord in an Al-Qaeda cell by convincing the terrorists some of their fellow jihadists are collaborating with the Americans; Crowe is his macho boss. The Changeling
Clint Eastwood’s latest, with Angelina Jolie as a mother whose kidnapped son is returned to her: or is he? Nov 28
Australia
Director Baz Luhrmann has been absent from cinema screens for seven years, so all eyes will be on this epic yarn set in the late 1930s, starring Nicole Kidman as an English aristocrat who has to make her way to the vast ranch she owns in northern Australia. On her trek, she is accompanied by a son-of-the-soil drover, played by Hugh Jackman, and no prizes as to how they get on. Fate, though, takes them to Darwin just as it’s bombed by the Japanese.
