For 46 years, special agent James Bond has been making the world a safer place, armed with his Walther PPK pistol, a licence to kill and an endless stream of double entendres.
The girls, the gadgets, the villains - all come and go, but the dashing double agent keeps living to fight another day.
Seven actors have filled the famous tuxedo, reinventing the role to match the age - from the classy Connery and the boystrous Moore to the psychologically flawed Craig and the much-maligned Lazenby.
No one does it better than Bond but who has done Bond better than all the rest?
We want you to vote for your favourite Bond. To help you decide, here’s our own assessment. Click on the links to view trailers for the films.
SEAN CONNERY (1962-1971 and 1983)
It’s hard to believe now, but Bond’s creator Ian Fleming had serious reservations about Sean Connery taking on the role of 007.
Fleming favoured Cary Grant to play his debonaire secret agent in the first film adaptation, but the Hollywood star would have bust the budget.
Forty six years on, and the popularity of Connery’s Bond endures. A former Mr Universe finalist, Connery injected the character with an irresistible mix of rugged sexuality and cool sophistication.
From his debut in the 1962 Dr No onwards, Connery’s Bond was the epitome of 60s style. His Saville Row suit-wearing, Aston Martin-driving, Martini-drinking agent delivered those classic lines that still define the part.
Connery was 32 when he began and made a total of seven Bond films. At 6ft 2.4in, he is the tallest ever Bond, and along with David Nixen, one of only two Bond actors to have won an Oscar (though neither won for their Bond performances.) Connery went bald at the age of 21 and so sports a toupe in all seven films.
Twice he handed back his Walther PPK pistol, only to return for Diamonds Are Forever and a record-breaking fee in 1971 and then again in 1983 at a mature 53 for Never Say Never Again.

Craig by FAR is the BEST Bond!!! hes hot and mysterious and muscular, and i enjoyed his films alot more, he is a very good actor and i hope he continues to make Bond films, my favorite is Casino Royal but i havnt seen Quantum of Solace yet so yea..Daniel Craig=best bond ,end of story!
Holly, St. Louis, south
I grew up with Moore's Bond. I liked Brosnan but he was basically a more hip version of Moore. I think Connery gets the hype because he was the first one. (Lazenby and Dalton ? Please)
All that said, and having not seen "Quantum" my vote goes to Craig. Best actor, and Bond feels like a human now.
Maja, Ljubljana,
Connery is the 'Daddy' without doubt. Craig is more like a bond villain than anything else. Always thought Liam Neeson would have been good in the role!
Bruce, London, UK
Given that everyone loves a nit-picker, I feel compelled to note that as of Die Another Day Bond had ditched his WWII-era PPK for a new Walther, the P99. An odd choice - the PPK is a small-framed semiautomatic perfect for clandestine use. The P99 is a full-framed combat pistol. Big bulge.
Renoir, Southampton, UK
I think the best Bond was Roger Moore.. a few (so-called) fans didn't like his approach - but he was Bond for 12 years and 7 films and made the part his own. His films were far more entertaining than the current serious/dour approach of QoS.
Steve W, Staffordshire, UK
I saw Quantum of Solace Today 04/11/2008 and have to Admit I was astonished
Please leave Daniel Craig alone (give the guy a chance he is cool and really deserves to be bond he is more superior to Pierce Brosnan) also People the worst James Bond film Is Goldeneye is an Insult to the Bond Franchise.
Max, London, England
Daniel Craig might be a fine actor, but he's not sauve enough to play Bond. He doesn't come across as smart, sharp-witted or particularly well-educated. He's a muscle-bound shrimp.
tkehler, Vancouver, Canada
best bonds in order,
Sean Connery
Timothy Dalton
Daniel Craig
Roger Moore
Pierce Brosnan
George Lazenby
jack, bristol, uk
I do have a soft spot for Pierce Brosnan myself...but really, you think Bond, you think Sean Connery.
The new films are good, and Daniel Craig is a decent actor, and they are of course closer to the original books. But somehow...well, they're just not Bond films. Bring back all the cheesy cliches!
Alice, Wokingham, England
In my opinion Sean Connery is the original and still the best but Daniel Craig has sent the Bond image back in the right direction and comes a close second in my books.
Joel, Sydney, Australia
sorry to all you die hard bond fans-of-old, but daniel craggy is the BEST, the bond of the books (forgetting hair and eye colour). He is rough tough andd brutal!
Wannabe Bond, london,
Daniel Craig is the best.
toni, birmingham, uk
Dalton was the best; believable with a subtle but scary edge. Moore, Connery were fun and suave but not as real. Craig's the best of all as a tough secret agent; he's the most exciting to watch. But he is not as close to the Flemming character as Dalton was.
Rick, New York, US
I don't really see the point in this, as there is never any doubt about the answer to this question! It's Sean Connery, of course!
They all are trying to be better than the great man -- but sadly that'll just be a dream. Bonds will come and go, but when one thinks of Bond, it's Sean Connery!
Elizabeth, Wokingham, UK
Dalton was the best as was his two movies. The most accurate portrayal of Fleming's character.
Paul Kelly, Dublin,
Loved Connery, liked Brosnan really liked Dalton but, sadly for my nostalgia, Craig is both bloody and brilliant
bruce , Croydon, United Kingdom
I could be the best James Bond... given the chance! Get that Martini ready.
Dave Farmer, Broxbourne, England
Conners is still in my mind the best of all the Bonds. A couple have come close but I was hoping that Pierce would have done better. Of all the bonds since Conners he was the best, in my opinion. I realize actors get old and they have to be replaced by new actors (something like Dr WHO).
Ed Gould, Chicago, United States
Sean Connery! My first Bond - From Russia with Love. I was 11 and only got to see this "adult film" because my brother had to go to a Russian Embassy party with my father and didn't want to waste the hard to get tickets, and I got lucky. But I liked all the Bonds. Craig is like Dalton -- very good!
Miles Nassah, Bangkok, Thailand
Timothy Dalton was the best bond. The closest to the character in the books and infact Daniel Craig is pretty much a newer version of him. Silly feminine bonds like Brosnan and Moore dont do the series any justice.
Nidaa Masood, London, uk
Why do all the recent Bonds have that strange running action .
Any ex special services would know that sprinting to a fight leaves you useless for a fight .
Nick Dixon, Sutton Coldfield, England
Although still pretty young I just cannot get enough of Bond and I really think that no one plays it better tha Connery. Keep making them ! By the way, where can I get the entire collection?
Nicolette Fleming, St. John's, Antigua
Roger Moore's humour? Oh, you're referring to his chest high trousers and his vacuum cleaner kissing style..?
For that understated menace and sheer style there's only ever been one Bond.
Yersh, and we all know who that ish..
Geoff, Bayonne, France
Although Connery was the first and (in my unhumble opinion) the best, Timothy Dalton actually comes the closest to the looks and personality of the character as portrayed by Fleming in the novels. Perhaps this is why he is generally the least favorite of many early Bond fans.
David Kramer, New York City, USA
Craig to me comes across as the most believable Bond. Looking at him is EXACTLY what I would expect from someone who was ex-SBS who has cut his teeth to become a 00 in MI6
Casino Royale was a very good film, glad to see that the human stunts are back and not the CGI. Realistic Bond.
Mike, MK,
They are all exceptional in their own way - Roger brought a degree of humour, George''s entry was actually a great film, Timothy was closest to the actual books character, Pearce had style and panache but for some Sean will always be Bond. However, I really believe that Daniel is the business.
Sir John Steed, Esher, UK
None other than Sean Connery.
Betty Geiser, Evansville, USA
I read all the Bond books as a teenager and am delighted that with Casino Royale they have gone back to the original premise. The later Bond movies were nothing like the books and only Connery came close to representing Flemings Bond. I think, however, Craig is a close second.
Liz, London,
There is only one Bond, and that is... James Connery Bond.
brian keating, agde, france
Sean Connery is THE James Bond.. If he was younger, his smooth macho smart alec would still work today.
bond james-bond, london, england
In terms of how close the characters are to the original James Bond of the books, it is probably Connery, but that's as much due to the films being set in the right kind of era with pretty much the same idea of masculinity, as it is to Connery's acting.
Jessica, Reading, UK
At the moment I would say Daniel Craig is a very close second to Sean Connery but if he carries on like he has started it will be very close between those two
Paul Ellis, Liverpool, England
Or...as someone on tv once said....STOP GETTING BOND WRONG !!
Peter , Westerham, U.K.
Roger Moore is my favourite, Bond is pure fantasy and should'nt be taken seriously . Moore never took it seriously and definitely added a bit of much needed humour to the part. He was also rather dishy in his day!
C. S-Urquhart, Edinburgh, UK
The best bond is the one who may never be played.
Sadly my personal commitments rule me out for the next 25 years, following which I shall retire and think about what might have been.
Marc, Antrim, N Ireland
I was always keen on Connery's portrayal though Roger Moore epitomised British stiff upper-lip, what? but now feel Daniel Craig has brought the whole thing up to date and is first class, hope he remains in the role for sometime to come!
Dave Farmer, Broxbourne, England
Nobody does it better than Sean Connery. The man is class !
Abbie, York, England
The best James Bond was the one created by Fleming that I imagine every time I read on the of the books.
Mark, High Wycombe, ENGLAND
Casino Royale wasn't like any previous Bond film, just another action thriller Daniel Craig is nothing like any previous Bond just a plain looking actor .Hopefully this departure won't last much longer. It's disappointing for me as a Bond fan. Pierce Brosnin the best so far..
Peter Wilson, Westerham, U.K.
When I was younger Roger Moore was my favourite Bond but he was overshadowed by Sean Connery as I got older...my clear favourite now is Daniel Craig: he is a far more plausible Secret Agent, a tough, gritty spy in a dangerous world. Bond is as he should be now under Craig's stewardship.
Stuart , Watford ,
Sean Connery and Tim Dalton. In a way, I can imagine Dalton being the most believable agent.
Dalton was underrated and needed better plots - Casino Royale would have down well with him.
Andy, London, UK
CONGRATS to Brocoli and family .... I just saw all 20 Bonds in under 2 months. All Bonds are great in their way. Not for the same reasons. Some take more getting used to Craig, Dalton are not the obvious suave good looking easy to fall for guys. I agree Bond has totally changed...An aquired taste!
Anne, london, United Kingdom
Craig's depiction of Bond is a stark departure from past Bonds that I'm not too fond of. Sean Connery was fantastic in all his Bond films. But my favorite by far is Pierce Brosnin. He was suave and serious... and he showed his pain and exertion better than the rest.
Andrew, Philadelphia,
Casino Royale was a real disappointment for me. Daniel Craig wasn't great but it was a very poor film. Unless the next one is much better (and the title doesn't exactly inspire confidence), why would anyone watch this rubbish anymore?
kc, Cork, ireland
Timothy Dalton deserves a nod. He was a fine Bond. Very underrated.
John, Bristol, UK
I may be out of step with a lot of people, but I really don't like Daniel Craig as Bond. For the first time ever I'm really not excited about a new Bond film. Casino Royale to me was a disappointment and I'd far prefer Goldfinger, Live and Let Die or Goldeneye. Bourne is better than new Bond.
Andrew, Cardiff, UK
Well Sean Connery is the most Favorite. Roger Moore not very faved. He said he was the worstiest Bond. Maybe Third. Well In my option you can't top Connery.
Coolio Hunt, Brisbane, Australia
