Unlike Head-On, the documentary The Yes Men never gets under the skin of its subjects. Two anti-globalisation pranksters, Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, lampoon the worst aspects of free trade by posing as World Trade Organisation representatives on the international conference circuit.

Curiously, only students pick up on the horror of their satiric lectures, which include the benefits of vote-rigging, slavery and the recycling of excrement into fast food, without getting the joke. So has this deceptive duo exposed the callous indifference of corporate business? Or is it simply that conference delegates are always in a jet-lagged stupor?

Who knows? The film lacks any outside voice commenting on what impact, if any, Michlbaum and Bonanno’s actions have had, and there’s no insight into their near-monkish commitment to their brand of satirical activism.

Too many questions are left unanswered in a film that resembles a meandering home movie, padded out with too much boring footage of how these guerrilla gadflies prepare their stunts. In the end, their ideas prove to be funnier than their execution.
