Melanie Reid: Nicole Kidman drifts about like a lost porcelain doll
It has every Australian cliché you could hope for, from kangaroos and Nicole Kidman to aborigines going walkabout and, yep, Waltzing Matilda. There is even, within moments of the opening scenes, Rolf Harris's wobble board.
But Baz Luhrmann's long-awaited, and over-budget epic Australia manages, against the odds, to avoid turning into one big sunburnt stereotype about Godzone country. Instead, in what turns out to be a multi-layered story it describes an Australia of the 1940s that is at once compellingly, beautiful and breathtakingly cruel.
Described as a cross between Gone with the Wind and Out of Africa it bears, in fact, little resemblance to either movie – apart from a similarly spectacular landscape as Out of Africa and a plot line that loosely resembles that of Gone with the Wind.
In this case, Lady Sarah Ashley, a passionless English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman), inherits a vast cattle station in the Northern Territories only to find that the station is the target of a dastardly takeover plot.
Much against her will, she is forced to enlist the help of a local stockman known only as Drover (Hugh Jackman), to save the station by driving her huge herd of cattle hundreds of miles across the Kuraman desert to Darwin. Which is then bombed by the Japanese.
In the worst Mills and Boon tradition, Lady Sarah – whose emotions are as frozen as Kidman's forehead – and the rough neck Drover loathe each other on sight but, as they endure the harsh and rather dusty travails of the cattle drive they quite quickly fall in love. She even teaches him to dance. Under a boab tree.
But if it sounds shallow and predictable, Australia is, in fact, anything but.
The cliches are saved by little jokes and asides, as if Luhrmann is saying 'Yes, I know, but what can you do?' In an early scene, as the newly-arrived Sarah drives toward her station, Faraway Downs, with Drover, a herd of kangaroo lopes alongside their vehicle.
As Sarah “oohs” and “aahs” with melodramatic wonder, a shot rings out and one of the kangaroos falls, killed by an Aboriginal stockman riding, literally, shot gun on the roof of the car. The horrified aristocrat spends the rest of the trip staring at the hind leg of the kangaroo hanging disconsolately over the windscreen, and the trails of blood that trek through the dust on the glass.
Later that evening she pops her head out of her tent door to behold the kangaroo being roasted for dinner plus (more importantly) the sight of a half naked Drover soaping himself down; a scene that will only do for Jackman what James Bond's swimming briefs did for Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, and will ensure Jackman as Craig's only viable cinematic rival as the heart throb du jour.
But what gives the film its heart is something else entirely. This is also the story of Nullah (Brandon Walters), a mixed race Aboriginal boy left orphaned by the inhumanity of Australian law. The 1940s was the time of the Stolen Generation, when mixed race children were banned from living either with their Aboriginal families or within the white community, but were taken from their homes to be brought up in church missions.
Nullah's increasingly frantic attempts to escape from the 'coppers' and his symbiotic relationship with his grandfather, the mystical King George, played with awesome power by the renowned Aboriginal dancer and musician David Gulpilil, is treated with a stark honesty and is what actually makes this film truly Australian in both its best and its worst sense.
Brandon, 13, was discovered by Lurhmann in his local swimming pool in the West Australian town of Broome and he plays Nullah with a combination of mischief and tragedy that may turn him into the real star of the film, despite – or perhaps because of – the fact that he has never acted before.
Australia is reported to have gone $US30million over its $US100 million budget and right to the last minute there was speculation that it would not be finished in time for its Australian premiere.
Australian audiences – who are already in love with the film – are guaranteed to flock to the box office but Luhrmann needs the American market if he is to break even. If all else fails there is always Jackman, stripped to the waist, under the shower. That if nothing else should pull them in.

I saw 'Australia' just this weekend. Reluctantly, I must admit as I wasn't sure what to expect. For the most part I was disappointed by some of the supporting actors who gave poor performances but the film was saved by Hugh Jackman and Brandon Walker. The line 'I sing you to me' brought goosebumps
Jen, Ipswich, Australia
Im 16 and just saw the film on DVD. Absolutely loved it. A lot of my friends thought the same, although most of their parents disagreed? Personally, didn't mind the clichés or predicatability, I thought Lurhman did a fantastic job of 'marketing' a magical place down under. Nullah was the highlight!
Alice, South Australia, Australia
I thought the movie was 'OK'. It was saved by Brandon Walters who I am amazed hadn't acted before. Nicole Kidman's acting was not great and in some scenes she look quite unattractive due to too much botox - shame. Her role should have been played by Kate Beckinsale.
Moira, EDINBURGH, Scotland
I Loved the movie. My hubby isnt much of chick movie watcher but he loved this movie too. We will most definetly watch it again. Hugh Jackman was fantastic one hell of a guy. I agree its right up there with Gone with the Wind and Out of Africa.
Ruby Izatt, Meerensee, South Africa
I loved it. Have watched it twice now and will no doubt watch it again. Not sure about Nicole Kidman, actually thought she over acted if that is possible but Hugh Jackman was fantastic as was Brandon Walters as Nullah. For me it was right up there with Gone with the Wind and Out of Africa.
Julia, Marton , New Zealand
My husband and I often fall asleep in our chairs when watching movies in the evening. We watched this till 12:15 AM never bored. Everytime the movie seemed to be over, it went on to another episode which continued to keep our interest. Enjoy the movie and stop thinking of it as a History lesson.
Diane, San Rafael, U.S.A.
I watched this movie on DVD last night with my wife and sadly we both agreed that this movie was one of the worst movies we have ever seen. It kind of reminded me of one of those old time 40s movies at the beginning where all the characters were completely stereotypical and OTT. BAD BAD BAD
bob alcock, christchurch, new zealand
I loved the film "Australia" the scenery was fantastic, that's what it is like living in the Australian outback. Remember this was the early 1940's and Nichol Kidman was an "English Lady" women were "Surposed to act or behave in that way as she did, in those days". Hugh "What can I say, what a hunk"
Olga, Muchea, Western Australia
Some Holly wood executive who has never stepped foot in Australia has taken 30 seconds to scribble this movie idea on a piece of toilet paper and has tried to make a cross between the corniest parts of The Wizard of OZ and an attempt at the humor of Batman (the old TV series), and has failed.
William Henderson, BYRON BAY, australia
loved it , loved it, loved it. I want to own it!
Donna Flynn, TULSA, USA
I thought the movie was wonderful, funny, sad, a wonderful love story, touching and emotional, deeply courageous, long you say, not for me, I loved it completely.
Elaine Lacey, Kedron, Australia
This the best review of this amazing movie! It's been compared to "Gone with Wind" & "Out of Africa" Those
are two of my Favorites but this is just as wonderful
and I totally agree but they didn't have Brandon Walters
whom is the heart and soul of this movie.
Bobbie, Gilbert, Arizona , USA
i loved it..best movie i have seen in a very long time.
doris, sudbury, ontario, canada
I love Nicole Kidman-always have. When I saw the trailers I knew I had to see this movie. The movie WASN'T a disappointment. I loved it. A bit long but I loved it nonetheless.
It was educational, inspirational & funny. Nullah stole the movie though. I love that kid! He should've gotten an Oscar!
Janice P. Scott, Naperville, U.S.
Absolutely stunning film! The epic tale includes a beautiful love story. Chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman is fantastic, electrifying. It is reminescent of old films. Good is good and bad is bad. Plenty of drama, tears, and a happy ending. Loved it!
Sheryll, Norman,
Nk is a talent from the early hollywood era.Fantastic as always. The movie was to long and bit boring.Hugh ,great bod,not the best face, russell crowe wins on that point. Little boy was a doll.
cin, chelan , wa
Just to talk about it more deeply.....
I took an aboriginal women with me to watch the film
and after watching it, she was in tears saying that
everything is fake and although she knows that it is just a fictional story, she wished the film to show what we have really done to the aborigines.
josh, darwin, Australia
I absolutely loved this movie. Nullah made the movie for me- the line he said 'I sing you to me' had me in tears both times I watched this movie. The movie is big, bold, beautiful and like the two other people also said magical & majestic in its making. This is a DVD must! Lynette Gush, South Africa
Lynette, Somerset West, South Africa
Lush, vibrant and poetic movie. I love that the story teller is the aboriginal boy and that in the end, he went back to his home instead of continuing to live with his white "parents," implying that Australia is not just the land of white Aussies but aborigines as well.
Kairos, Manila, Philippines
FROM THE WEST INDIES:
This is a magical film...utterly beautiful. Sitting on a tiny island in the middle of nowhere and watching such a great film, we applaud the boldness of its vision.
XXOO from the other OZ
s. meade, Valley Church, Westy Indies
I loved "Australia", and so did the rest of the large American audiences with me. Hugh Jackman is a [gorgeous and talented] revelation as leading man and with Nicole Kidman makes the best, steamiest love scenes I've seen in a long long time. Brandon was the beautiful heart of the movie.
Cheers!
Joanne, Seattle, USA
what a beautiful film, it spoke to me on many levels. i think people that dont get this film really dont get australia - the country. or havent been to this magical place.
how lucky i am to be able to live here... in the land of Oz..
Victoria, sydney, australia
Whoever chooses to criticise the acting, scenery and plot of this movie obviously did not see the same movie I saw! This ia a movie of grand proportion, with an exciting storyline that unfolds as wonderfully as the scenery. The history is cleverly woven into the plot. All in all a great movie.
Bruce, Northam, Western Australia
A huge disappointment. The acting was was mostly terrible (NK was embarrassing), the history inaccurate (unfortunately, many will take it as the truth), the amazing scenery ruined by poor computer graphics, cliches galore and an hour too long. Saved (only just) by Hugh Jackson and Brandon Walters.
Sara, Christchurch, NZ
I really enjoyed the movie once we got over the rather stiff acting of Nicole Kidman at the beginning - someone trying to play the stiff upper lipped Englishwoman very badly. However she improved tremendously as the film went on.
I really enjoyed the film.
Donald Priestly, Dubai, UAE
dont let the naysayers prevent you from enjoying this true epic adventure. the very nature of these movies prevents emphasis on character development and subtle interchanges that can reveal complexities. in exchange we get great physical beauty and historical sweep. a good tradeoff.
jon, norfolk, usa
Nic, beefy Hugh and the wonderful indigenous actors did a good job at rescuing an overlong, overweight script that was so cliched it was grating. The direction was OTT with many fine aussie actors giving cringing performances. The NT scenery was destroyed by digital effects. 1/2 star for Hugh's abs.
Pip, Sydney, Australia
This film was Fan-Tas-Tic! Brandon stole the show, but all in all it was gripping and SO emotional. Loved every minute of it. It's beautifully filmed and everyone does a good job!
Diana Dabrera, Wallington, UK
WONDERFUL MUST SEE MOVIE!! you have to watch this movie really entertaining and all actors and actresses done a really really good job!! big ups to nicole for a wonderful performance love it!!
sarah, auckland, New Zealand
As a Texan, I enjoyed it. Good film, but not great. Nicole could've done a bit better, but perhaps it was Baz's direction at times. Hugh was typically pretty good. Great to Brown, Thompson, Gulpillil and Ngoombujarra chew scenery. Brandon Walters stole the show; goodonya, lil mate! 3/5 stars.
Mark, Fort Worth, Texas, U.S.A.
From all these movies I like only 'There Will Be Blood' , rest of them is no really interesting
Oskar, London,
Although a bit too long, I think Baz has created yet another magical movie... it's pure entertainment and can only be looked at it that way. This movie has it all... comedy & tragedy mixed together with a little bit of magic and 'cheese'. Advice: Don't that your boyfriend!
Michaela, London, UK
To Lindsay (from Deal, U.K.)
You will be pleased to know that I am one (of very many Aussies) who thought the film was just nonsense. It was corny, and pandered unashamedly to the most uniformed of American perceptions of Australia. By the way, Australia was attacked, but not invaded, by Japan.
Terry Gibson, Canberra,
Mixed thoughts about the film... enjoyable but far too long- But certainly does not deliver up to all the hype. Too many 'mini' events and no real focal point to the story. Another 'Wizard of Oz'...
Kate Colgan, Coventry, Warwickshire
I love this movie. Tears and laughter!
I'm not usually the weepy type and was taken aback at the emotion it brought forth. I wasn't alone though...I noticed tears trailing down the faces of several grown men...and these are tough Texans!!
Nancy, Pearland, USA
I went hesitantly due to the mixed reviews - I am so glad that I did (3/01) - It was brilliant. Was never really a NK fan - I am now. She played her character well. I loved the humour and the story. This movie is a classic!! Thankyou so much Baz and to your fine cast!!!
Mary, Perth, Australia
Well Aussies may love it, but I thought it was so awful that it was funny. What was with the music, including Nimrod at the end?
Lindsay , Deal, UK
. I think this film was the worst Australian film I have ever seen; with too many cliches and not enough of the things that make Australia the fascinating place that it really is. I also noticed the absence of flies, which promptly downgrades any attempt at realism..! It needed a Dennis Potter.
Judith Gough, Kings Lynn,
Saw Australia yesterday and loved every minute of it. The time flew by. Brandon stole the show. Loved Jackman, as any woman would do - not convinced about the chemistry between him and Nicole Kidman though. Watched film with husband and two teenage sons who also rated it. Will go again.
Gail Hollis, Stourbridge, UK
Loved the film, great entertainment and Hugh Jackman leaves Daniel Craig standing in the swimmers department! Jackman has my vote for the next Bond.
Rowena, Singapore,
The author is incorrect in referring to Australia as "God's Own Country". This moniker, was, in fact, coined in relation to New Zealand in the 19th Century by the New Zealand Premier Richard John Seddon. Australia, meanwhile, is better known as the "Lucky Country"
Robbie Fyfe, Wellington, New Zealand
Saw Australia yesterday - enjoyed the entertainment value of a film that whilst it may not be factually or geographically correct - it was entertainment. The pace of the film - was good, the scenery was lovely, the acting ranged from excellent to average. Getting a happy ending - nice in these times
julia, derby, uk
Apart from the script being a cobbled version of Out of Africa, Rabbit Proof Fence and an episode of Bonanza, the geography being absolutly incorrect, people wearing jumpers and coats in the tropics, the town did not resemble Darwin and was an hour too long, it was a good way to stereotype us.
Graham, Canberra,
The film Australia is a very nice movie. I love it but would have been even better if it ended tragically - Nullah taken away and his fate unknown, Nicole Kidman's character killed in the bombing and the Drover wounded forever for walking away from it all.
yusof asiah, kl,
An old-fashioned blend of a western, romance and quasi-historical epic movie. If you try to see something more than what really it is, you are in a wrong film. Sometimes it is boring, it should be shorter, but I enjoyed the film and my wife too, so it is a right mixture.I missed films like this.
Stergios, Ioannina, Greece
Just seen this film on opening night in the UK. Nicole Kidman is one of my favourite actresses but I just didn't like the film. It was an old fashioned "gone with the wind" type of movie with predictable outcomes.
dan, leeds, uk
I loved this film. An epic story soaked in Austalian outback scenery. 'They don't make films like that anymore?'. They do now. And it raises issues most of the world didn't even know about. And got them talking about them.Compared to your average hollywood offering, it's a masterpiece.
Jayne Jackson, Hampton, UK
The kid was the true star in a movie that simply attempted to do too much. Had the plot centred upon the issue of the stolen generation and ditched completely the WWII/ Wizard of Oz themes, we would have had a movie about an hour less in length and far more compelling to watch, even for Americans.
Terry, Canberra,
surely this is a work of fiction--what on earth are people going on about historical accuracy for--then why not go and watch historically inaccurate documentaries--its a big gutsy story--which doesn't pretend to be more than entertainment-can we not take every film about australia so seriously??
luke Whitington, florence, italy
There is so much to like about Australia, that it being a bad sport to pick at any parody, cliches or conflicting elements in the storytelling. I found the whole thing grew on me, including the handsome drover and the aboriginal story, simply told but beautiful. The cinematography was very appealing
shirley dianne, Adelaide, Australia
Loved it ! A must have in my movie library!
Another Casablanca.
Jean, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
jeannie, Toronto, Canada
A definite must-see movie to make up your own mind about whether or not you like it. The fact it has evoked such strong responses at both ends of the spectrum says something about the great potential of the movie. Corny and unbelievable at times but overall, worth watching and one of its kind.
Verona, NY, USA
The first few scenes of this film seem like a cartoon with caricatures of the main subjects--the awfully, awfully English woman; the hard-nut Aussie drover; the so obvious underwear suitcase 'accident' and the 'unexpected' kangaroo shooting. We are then subjected to a remake of "The Overlanders"!
Peter, ellicott, USA
I loved this movie, has the feel of old fashioned Hollywood. Scenery is great. Kidman and Jackman are good. You will fall
in love with the kid who plays Nulah!! What a find. Going back to see it again tomorrow. Can't wait for the sequel. Best motion picture I have seen in 10 years.
Don, Mojave Desert Outback, USA
One of the worst films ever made!
todd lichti, chicago, usa
I migrated to Australia from Philippines and my first home in Australia was in a little townTUMUT, so for me its easy to understand Film Australia. If you have experienced living in a country then you should love Film Australia because its the real thing in country area in Australia
Sarah C Lund, Kamabah, Australia
It's not a movie -- it's a test of endurance! Not the worst movie I've seen - that award belongs to Enchanted April, but definitely in the Top Ten Worst.
James , Sydney,
When I left the movie Australia, I couldn't work out what had changed about me. Then I realised, I had fallen in love with Hugh Jackman's character - the Drover. I was on a high for days!
Liz, Melbourne, Australia
I just saw this movie and loved it. I can't believe all the negative press about it. Baz, Nicole, Hugh, Brendan, the iconic Australian actors with their cameo roles, the production team, thanks so much for giving us a movie that is both uplifting, entertaining, and epic. We need more like it!
katherine, Gold Coast, Australia
Great!!!!!!! Especially if you're like like me and need everything easy to follow... oh, I'm normally mesmerised by shiny things and pretty lights but this didn't have any - it was still bonza! Steer away from it if you've ever passed an exam.
Steve, Wollongong, Australia
Amazing! Amazing Movie. What we need a beatiful story! Thank you Baz, Nicole and Hugh. Loved NK she amazing.
karl, Cardiff, UK
too much criticism about this film is personal. Stop taking it so seriously..it's a glorious theatrical experience. Beautiful scenery beautifuly filmed and the actors carry it off and do their part well. Nicole is fine, Jackman, great and the ladies will love him..the little kid..just magical.
Jon, Bangkok, Thailand
should the film have delivered the truth about Australian history, a chance to uncover another country stolen from innocent people by the British Empire...yet again.
David Jones, London, UK
Oh my .. such an unforgettable film. And yes, I am still moaning outloud at the beautiful body of Mr. Hugh Jackman. What a cowboy ... and what a wonderful story.
Vicki, Ferdinand IN, USA
I was disappointed to see otherwise good actors distorted/directed into strangely over-acted caricatures. That might have been a clever Luhrmann artifice in Moulin Rouge, but it became uncomfortable cliche in this film.
WWII bombing yes, but invasion was historically and logistically implausible.
James, Sydney, NSW
'Australia' is a parody of the Hollywood blockbuster western or epic. The exaggerated caricatures show Australians can laugh at themselves: nonetheless, the plot reflects situations and events that have had a significant influence on Australian history.
Willy, Brisbane,
Saw the movie. Simply.... We enjoyed it!! Laughed & cryed. Isn't that what a good movie does!! And yes Hugh Jackman is hot.
S Gersbach, Emerald, Australia
Saw the movie, loved it!
Pity the truth was sacrificed in the making of i!
The Japanese never invaded any part of Australia!
The half-caste children were treated about the same as the British orphans who were sent to Aus. after W.W. 2!
No-one cared!
No-one appologised!
Such is life!
laurie marsh, Brisbane, Australia
I've seen Australia twice already and loved it. I recommended it to my friends and all of them loved it. I just cannot believe reviewers, particularly Australians, criticised the movie in such a harsh way. Australia helps you to experience "a story" lacked in many recent films. Worth seeing.
Tommie, Brisbane, Australia
Worst movie I've seen in a long time.
Jason, Austin, USA
I wasn't sure what I was going to see when I went to see Australia today. However I was more than pleasantly surprised. It scratches the surface of the severe injustice that aboriginal Australian's have faced I wish that all our schools had the real history as part of the curriculum.
nellie, doonan, australia
Mr and Mrs Smith, Chicago, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, Oceans Eleven, it should be illegal to make movies like this that are rated just because of the so called star actors in them, all very shallow boring movies, i want to be entertained not watch in awe of the actors in it. Refund
Paula, Melbourne, Australia
Australia is a great movie, it's not a documentary. The educated would know what is the true story, i don't go to the movies to learn a lesson in history.
Jane, Sydney, Australia
I've seen Australia twice and will go again while it is on the big screen, the only way to see it. Nicole played her part perfectly, she has the necessary cuteness about her that Cate Blanchette, as good as she is, i only see in totally serious morbid rolls, nothing humorous about Cate.
Jane, Melbourne, Australia
. "No Country for Old Men" an award winning movie was a load of crap, what was it about, a killer who got away with murdering a lot of people all for drug money, Oprah was right Australia is the kind of movie we need.
Maurice, Sydney, Australia
i'd agree with ken from perth,it's rubbish.Hugh was good the kid great, nicole ok but the story omigod.
There was no cohesion and so many lame and corny
moments,i hoped for great but baz lurhman messed
it up badly
peter, brisbane, australia
Your true understanding of the issue is shown by your use of the term 'half-caste' Andromeda. It is far more complex than that. Many Indigenous Australians did not experience that period of Australian history the same way.
Mullens, Melbourne, Australia
Nicole Kidman had me laughing hysterically during the truck ride with Drover out to the cattle ranch! She played the part perfectly. For all you Hugh Jackman fans, there were many GQ shots. If you had any doubts about him being voted the "sexiest man alive" you won't anymore.
Debrah, Salt Lake City, USA
In Australia we're totally over accusations of genocide. I went to school with three half-caste aboriginal kids who are great people. Nobody killed their parents, they received good educations, two have university degrees. Imagine that happening in an outback camp. Also, they have nice families.
andromeda, cooks hill, australia
NICOLE Kidman is an ammazing, talented and beautiful actress!!!!Ditto
Sk, Geneva,
I saw the show and really loved it. Having been to Australia, I particularly enjoyed places that I had been. The show stopper to me was Nullah. What an adorable child.
Ginny Cracraft, Oak Hill, USA
Saw the movie and absolutly loved it!!! Not a big Nicole Kidman fan, you tend to warm up to her as the movie goes on. Hugh Jackman, WOW, the bathing scene was sooo worth seeing the movie. Aside from that loved the story line, scenery, and overall fantastic movie, a must see!! :)
Holly MacMullin, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada
Never a Nicole Kidman fan and never will be, with that exception, saw the movie and enjoyed it, even after the bagging it received in most of the reviews, it was a good movie.
Vin Francis, Sydney, Australia
I wonder how a film entitled England and attempting a similar vein would be received. We seem much quicker to see the bad in our country before trying to celebrate it.
paul, barnet, uk
Great movie tells so much of australia in that time great shots of Australia , great acting a must for all Australians.Darwin in that time being attacked shows how close war was to Australia.
Allan Jolly, Happy Valley , Australia
My wife and I go to the movies every Friday night. This is one of the best movies we have seen in a long, long, long time. And Brandon is, indeed, a "show stealer" as well as your heart.
Gary, Atlanta, Georgia
Gary Barnowske, Atlanta, GA, USA
Writing as an Australian, I have just seen the movie "Australia" and liked it very much. It really is three movies in one: first, it is a travelogue of a wide brown land with sweeping plains and lofty mountain ranges; second, it is a glorious Mills & Boon style romance between an English aristocrat
John Gillam, Sydney, Australia
I saw Australia today and was amazed. It is a great movie with a great storyline that helps us understand what the natives of Australia went through. Nicole and Hugh were outstanding and little Brandon was amazing. He really captured my heart.
I think that Baz Lurhmann really out did himself.
Sally Salinas, San Juan, USA
I saw this movie today and I was completely involved from start to finish. As an Australian who has lived in the city and on the land, I have known characters like these. It is truly breathtaking, in every aspect.
sue, melbourne, australia
Don't believe any negative people say about this movie. It's a great story, fabulously acted, has some great shots of the landscape and the actors and a wonderful piece of Australian propaganda. And remember, nothing Baz Lurhmann does is going to be ordinary.
Nick, Sydney, Australia
If Australia (the country) hopes to rebrand itself as something surprising and mysterious through Australia (the film) why do it with a basic Outback plot that we all know, in an epic that's too long (they always are) with a leading actress we've all seen?
Riff, London, UK
Yeah, you're right Sam, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, Toni Collette, Naomi Watts, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe (sorta), Rose Burne, Mel Gibson - rubbish, all of them.
Adrian, London, UK
Wow, some one else from Yarra Glen. Now thats the real Australia!
Michael, Yarra Glen, Australia
No-one but Australian's are going to want to see this. Will it pull in more tourists? No. Too far away, expensive to get there and full of nasty insects and animals. Also, I can't name a convincing Australian Actor or Actress, so the movie can't be that good either! Except Paul Hogan maybe?
Sam, London, UK
Well Aussies .... I must have a say here ... this american Gal can't thank you enough for Hugh Jackman!
Rebecca, Colorado Springs, Colorado,
The trouble with this movie is that is full of Austrlian cliches. It isn't an Australian movie without beer , kangeroos . The urban Australians who made this movie are only sourcing their own cliches and stereotypes of this part of Australia. Northern Australia has more darkness, shadow and light.
Thomas Bell, Yarra Glen, Australia
Nicole Kidman has been subjected to the most amazing personal criticism of late. It is extraordinary. I saw the film and thought she was fabulous in it. She is an old fashioned movie "star" - not just an actress.
Laura, Sydney, Australia
I agree Anne. In my opinion, it's the best thing Nicole Kidman has done and she seems to have approached it with a great sense of humour; I must admit I was very surprised. And I've not heard an audience let out a mass sigh, like this, since Clark Gable's first appearance in GWTW.
John Giles, Sydney, Australia
At last we have people standing up and saying these people can't act...Keira Knightley has to be the worst actress of this or any generation..how has she got away with it? In comparison Nicole is Bette Davis. Knightley makes wood look animated.
laurie, alice, australia
For a start, I think the author of this review porbably meant to say "God's own country" not "Godzone". That was pretty funny.
Haven't seen the film yet, so reserving judgement on it ... however, I can't help think Cate Blanchett would have been a better choice. When isn't she?
Natalie, Sydney, Australia
Not sure if you're right to say Australians are in love with it ... it was only released here yesterday and most Australian critics have been very subdued about it in pre-release reviews.
Helen, Sydney, Australia
Agree with you Jo - Nicole can't act and will be the kiss of death for this movie as she has been for nearly all her movies and she's laughing all the way to the bank hoping Hollywood's powers to be haven't woken up to her. Baz lots of other more capable Aussie actresses out there!
Chris, Balmain, Australia
Please spare more of Nicole Kidmans very B grade acting ,,two very important things are needed for good acting and that is chararter and expression ,designer gowns and cosmetics do not make a great actress The last time I saw Nicole look natural was in Dead Calm

For crying out loud! This is a movie! Stop going on about the history etc blah blah blah! It is a movie made to entertain and I don't care if its not 'right' about the stolen generation hooplah! Get over it! Lets not get into all that stuff, its just a movie and a damn exciting one at that!

Fail to be enthusiastic when I have to look at the vast expanse of wasteland that is Nicole Kidman's forehead. Come on Baz there are far more capable talented ausralian actresses out there. I fear Kidman will be the kiss of death for this over hyped over rated over budget advert for Australia.

Don't be fooled this movie was terrible. It is so historically wrong that it is nationalistic proganda. No british aristocratic women would have had contact with an Aboriginal circa 1940 in Australia it just never happened. Aboriginals had been victims of Slavery, Atrocities and genocide.

"Stolen Generation" . Hmmm. Perhaps Baz would care to make a film about the white children that were "taken" from their families at that time because the parents couldn't care for them, due to poverty and the results of the Depression. It happened. I witnessed it.

Hey, Sue, Perth, Australia! I don't have to be "Australian" to give a movie a go! Your misplaced patriotism assures me that "Australia" will be a very pale reflection of the real thing.
