Chubbuck: Howard Hughes never had to grow up. His toy soldiers were movie sets and real planes, so Leonardo’s boyishness is appropriate. I was pleasantly surprised. I saw Leonardo as selling out a bit, but he’s got back to doing the work here.

Johnny Depp, Finding Neverland

Fine: Where DiCaprio can’t find the adult, Depp is brilliant at finding the child. And he beautifully found it here. You believe he had the soul to create what J. M. Barrie did.

Alhanti: He’s always trying to make everyone else see things through his eyes. He believes that all things are possible, and that’s the essence of a child.

Chubbuck: It’s so perfect for him to play Peter Pan’s creator. His bottom line in all his roles is a childlike glee.

Jamie Foxx, Ray

Fine: It is a good performance, but ultimately it felt more like an imitation.

Chubbuck: Jamie found lots of connections to make his performance come alive. He became this man.

Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda

Fine: I thought this was head and shoulders above the others. You get every fibre of this man’s journey.

Alhanti: This is a brilliantly paced performance because little by little he’s forced to take action in all this chaos. He shows us how adversity can make a person do things they never thought themselves capable of.
