The
Dark Knight
"Heath Ledger’s posthumous Oscar looks in the bag. The film is bleak and
brilliant. Batman is Hamlet and Ledger is a sensation as the Joker. The late
legend doesn’t just steal the film, he murders it in style. You will feel
utterly numb afterwards" - James Christopher
Gomorrah
"Matteo Garrone’s startling film about the criminal underworld in Naples
is one of these rare movies that can alter our perception of life. It's
brave to the point of foolhardy" - James Christopher
Man
On Wire
"The American director James Marsh has created one of the greatest heist
films of all times. Two things make his gripping docudrama so different:
it’s all true, and the only thing stolen is air. It isn’t about art, it’s
about us" - Cosmo Landesman
There
Will Be Blood
"Paul Thomas Anderson's movie about the scramble for oil is a masterclass
in how the West was truly sold. It's a marvellously entertaining soap: a
sort of Dickens does Dallas, without the sex or swimming pools" - James
Christopher
Time
and Winds
"The kind of movie that was invented for the word “ineffable”. It is, at
a guess, about life’s relentless march, about death, rebirth, and the hollow
limits of religion in the face of overwhelming nature. When you’ve got it
you’ve got it for good" - Kevin Maher
4
Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
"Every frame of this Romanian drama set in the 1980s about two female
students trying to arrange an illegal abortion is brilliantly thought out. A
stunning and demanding watch" - James Christopher
Alexandra
"Aleksandr Sokurov’s strange and dusty fable charts the unlikely visit of
an old Russian woman to her grandson’s desert garrison in Chechnya. Full of
intriguing mysteries" - Edward Porter
Appaloosa
"Director (and star) Ed Harris reintroduces us to the old-style strong
and silent western hero. Get ready to swoon" - Wendy Ide
Assembly
"Feng Xiaogang’s epic war film is just about the most impressive one
since Saving Private Ryan" - Cosmo Landesman
Australia
"Baz Luhrmann's long-awaited, and over-budget epic manages, against the
odds, to avoid turning into one big sunburnt stereotype about Godzone
country. Compellingly beautiful and breathtakingly cruel" - Anne
Barrowlcough

Indy 4 is, indisputably, one of the worst films of all time and easily the worst in the series, making temple of doom look like orson welles. I mean, P-LEASE.... you see the south park episode where Indy gets raped by Speilberg and Lucas? The film is like a Lucas on crack wet dream - appalling...
Nikko, auckland, nz
James Christopher loves the worst movies
James Lovely, Seoul, Korea
James Christopher clearly an easily delighted simpleton.
Oli, London,
i rekon garp should be on the list, it's my favourite (:
but its not very well known.
Tessssssssssa, melbourne,
slumdog millionaire was rubbish. forget the oscars. the wrestler, milk, the reader, the dark knight ...
wil, ebetsu,
Have any of you seen 'The boy in striped pajamas'? I thought it should have definately been on the list, in my opinion one of the most moving films i have ever seen.
Henry, Poole, England
The movie itself is very good. But once you start comparing it to the book, then it goes south. The only way I can watch the movie and not make rude comments about it is by not thinking about the book. But when you make a movie, it -is- supposed to be much like the book. I give it a thumbs down. :S
Kenzy, Michigan, USA
Yeah I'm confused as to why it's not on here. I read the books AFTER I saw the movie and when I first watched the movie I loved it. I saw it in theatres 6 times. After that I bought the books and have read the 1st 2 and I love them! The makeup in it was awful, I will say that, but overall I loved it
Courtney, St.Louis , Missouri
As most books are always better than the movie. But I have not read the twilight books, and seeing the movie I thought it was one of the best films of the year. I've watched it 5 times in the last 2 weeks. Love it, its brilliant.
Meghan, Portland, usa
Oh God I hate the movie twilight i love the books but the movie was choppy and they didnt put in important parts. Even my friend who love twilight ALOT hates the movie :(
Laura, Miami,
if they made a movie version of 'Hello' magazine there would be a bunch of people who thought that was the best ever movie. I confess I haven't seen twilight but i'd be very surprised if it was better than In Bruges or No Country For Old Men. They were brillliant to watch but also thought provoking.
alex, lymington, uk
cloverfield would have been more scary (and better) if it were just the little monsters and less destruction. That would have made it easier to relate to and therefore imagine yourself a part of it.
alex, lymington, uk
Yes, Twilight is a great movie and i think it would of made the top 10 easy! It really should be here! who agrees with me?
:D
Victoria, new york, america
Twilight is just a silly romance. Not really top ten material. Should of been in the top 100, but probably in the bottom half somewhere.
Cory , Chiang Mai, Thailand
I agree Twilight has had a huge impact on me
It made me wish it was a real
You should put it in top 10 at least if not number 1
Charlotte, Brighton, England
Yeah where is it i was hoping to find it on here but it isnt .
It was a very veyr good movie
Its NEEDS a place on here
Cassie, Gorokan,
ok .....Where is Twilight-the best movie ever. I think teh movie deserve to be first on the list.....!!
Gabriela Gesheva, Pleven, Bulgaria
Twilight should be on the list. It's not just the best film of 2008, it's the best film of all time.
Tammy, Rotherham, England
Yea I was thinking the same.. Where is Twilight?
Orla, Belfast, Ireland
Twilight should def be on the list!
Sunny, Dubai, UAE
The cast was a great pick, but the acting itself was horrible. It was so gloomy and it felt like everyone had a stuttering problem. Maybe it was the directors fault but something was off. It should not be on the list. Sorry to all the twilight fans but looks doesn't make a movie great.
susan, edmonton, canada
Sure, Twilight did make a lot of money. But the ratings are pretty low, it's not critically acclaimed and didn't even win any awards (not that I know of). If it's lucky, it might win the next Teen Choice Awards or something. Which is not very honorary.
Sora , Calgary, Canada
Twilight the movie was not worth the money I put into watching it. It was actually so bad that I refuse to watch the second 'New Moon' unless they have a new director. The did not stick to the book, made up their own plot squeezing in twilight dialogue. No it should not be on the LIST
Sunny, New Yoork, USA
twilight should not be on this list, is the worst movie, nothing to do with the book, it did break record but that doesn't mean is a good movie, cuz is not, lets hope New Moon is much much better, i love the books, hate the movie.
heidi, clifton, usa
Twilight should be near the top of this list. It was record breaking in presales alone. The movie was so well done, and such a huge hit, it stayed true to the book, and the casting was perfect.
Kelly , Winnipeg, Canada
Twilight - was almost identical to the book which not many films where this year. It should be on the list !
Charli, Liverpool, England
"Easy Virtue" should be on this list.
Amy Cottesloe, St Albans, UK
No mention of Helen Hunt's remarkable movie, Then She Found Me. What kind of list is this???
Hogan, Los Angeles,
Passchendaele is gripping poignant and heartbreaking . This is one of the rare movies that lives within you long after you have left the theater. Brilliantly made with themes of Love, loss, courage, heartbreak makes this one of the better movies and should be on your list.
Dan, Reno, usa
OMG!
how come twilight isnt on here?
its the best movie i have ever seen!
x
jemma, adelaide, australia
Why isn't Twilight in this list? I think it's a better movie than Hsm 3 or other ones I see around here..
Stefania, Bucharest, Romania
Anyone who saw Passchendaele - anyone - promptly acknowledged that it was the best thing this year. Naturally, being made in Canada, it received not just scant, rather no attention whatsoever. Do see it. It, as "Australia", dwarfs anything made in the USA. But it WAS made ...only in Canada......pity
Newman Wallis, Bracebridge , Canada
im glad twilight didnt make the list!!! although it would be #1 in best books. i thought the movie was terriable.
terri, paris,
I will agree with Indiana Jones... That was god awful.. it kept getting worse by the minute. I think a huge part of Twilights success was due that Harry Potter got pushed back to July so alot of people needed a fantasy movie to grip on to. It might have been good. not best this years by any means.
Matt, Kelowna, Canada
How did Twilight NOT make the list
- and Indiana Jones did?
That was one of the biggest let downs of the century
Never mind 2008!
Danni, Rutland, England
Appaloosa 4 stars...you're taking the Michael, aren't you.
This film truly showcases the reason why Westerns should be consigned to the graveyard of film making history.
Graham, Sheffield,
What about TWILIGHT???!!!??!!?!?!?!
Christy, Los Angelas,
You've got "The Strangers" in your worst films and in your best films! I think that says it all.
Troy, Wakefield, West Yorkshire
the changeling? rocknrolla?!! the mind boggles.
roisin, belfast,
For those in the USA who ask about some films not being in the list - it's probably because they haven't come out here yet! You're lucky to get them before the end of the year so they can be eligible for the oscars. So back to the list.....Indiana Jones? Burn After Reading? You can't be serious?!
CD, London, UK
Hear hear, Aaron! The Dark Knight was very poor - messy and confusing, with a dodgy script and weak characterisation. Who really cared what happened? The ending was bathetic (intentionally, maybe, but still irritatingly) and the whispering was annoying. Ledger was good, but not enought to save it.
will, London,
wheres Boy A? im not there? step brothers?
and if you can have kenny, i`l have shawshank redemption
phil, devon,
Weird how there are always some people who just don't see how good a film is. No accounting for bad taste I guess.
Ben, London,
Aaaron has hit the nail on the head batman was awful
cameron, London,
how come " The strangers" got into both the best and the worst movielists?
amanda, singapore,
the only thing that felt numb after watching the Dark Knight was my backside from sitting through the best part of three hours of poteneous drivel - was their a special version of this film that was only shown to critics, because the one I saw was trite, nonsense
aaron, london,
Lui, Chester - Last King of Scotland a good movie, I agree. One of the best of 2006. Come on, mate, keep up!
Tom, Newbury,
Some of these films aren't in UK cinemas until 2009 (e.g. Frost/Nixon), so how is it that they can appear in a "best films of 2008" list?
Katherine, Edinburgh,
Why do you have The Strangers in both best and worst movies of 2008?
Dmitry, Vladoivostok, Russua
You're wrong: "Gomorroah" was one of the greatest disappointments of 2008! Apart from the first establishing shot of that purgatoryal housing estate, the film offers nothing that's not already been told better, more effectively and more cinematically in other films, for example La Haine.
Mona, Los Angeles, US
Man on Wire - breathtaking, awesome, poetic, compelling. This was the film of the year for me. The artistic crime of the century, brought off by a charismatic frenchman and his assorted bunch of allies. Photography and music was thrilling. I loved it. Seen it twice, must see again.
Liz wilde, Manchester,
While I agree with comments about many of the big movies that made this list, it is helpful in highlighting films that the masses may have missed -- such as I.O.U.S.A., a sobering documentary about America's debt-driven economy, which could hardly be more timely.
Derek, Charlottesville, U.S.
Chocolat is the greatest, for its sensitive look at love and relationships.
Devika, London,
Dark Knight definitely - Heath Ledger was riveting and deeply disturbing. Wall -E as well beautifully innocent (lost it towards the end but that's American films). I'd put James Bind is this, not as good as Casino but, a really good film.
Keith Manaton, London, United Kingdom
Waltz With Bashir is film of the year for me, way better than most of the dross I've seen this year
tim, london, uk
In Bruges is my top film for the year, so clever and so beautifully filmed and acted. Well done Colin Farrell, you were brilliant!!
Batman was close second for me - Heath Ledger was astonishing
jenny Phillips, adelaide, australia
the dark night , really brought Batman to the proper adult leavell. but a 12a ? i think not , but other-wise great .
geoffrey harris, neath, glamorgan
Last King of Scotland for me.
Lui, Chester, Britain
In Bruges was my favorite of the year. Others that are missing are Miss Pettigrew lives for a day - charming and very funny, and also The Other Boleyn Girl.
Marina, Felixstowe, England
Strike a light! I've only seen one of these films (Diving Bell and the Butterfly) Wild horses wouldn't drag me to most of the rest - Mamma Mia? The sub-standard Quantum of Solace? No very thank you as Catherine Tate might put it.
Frank Cox, Dorchester, Dorset, UK
I thought Body of Lies was absolutely gripping!
Elroy, Essex, UK
Indiana Jones? You cant be serious. That was so rediculous that we along with others walked out half away during the film.
kobren, Uxbridge,
Where is MILK? Sean Penn gives a stunning performance in this inspiring year end marvel!
davincidoodle, Los Angeles,
Without a doubt. Phenomenal on IMAX.
CT, Gotham, USA
Why is "Body of Lies" not in the 5 star bracket? Absolutely fantastic film!
Graeme, Edinburgh,
The best movie I saw this year was not on the list. "Fireproof''
was well acted and touched me where I live. I suppose it was
a little too "Christian" for the Hollywood crowd.
Jay Prichard, Billings, MT, USA
I like movies where charcters are bigger than life and thrill me to the edge of my seat. The Dark Knight did for me this year, and I found Ledger's performance delicious, another Richard III, who manages to deconstruct all hopes of honor.
Patricia Love, Albuquerque, USA
The Silence of Bees was my favourite film of the year
Ken, Sawbridgeworth, United Kingdom
Ledger's performance was great, but the rest was awful . The district attorney's transformation into "Two Face" was absurdley shallow and Joker's " all people are evil give them the trigger and watch" ship bomb scene was the most pathetic scene since Sly starting the "perestroika" in Rocky IV.
Silja, Belgrade, Serbia
The movie W. is a nono. No politics, just an exagerated interpretation of Bush. Neither does it characterize the men nore the government. After an hour you are still waiting for something...After an hour an a half you just want it to end. It´s not even a good apology...
Claudia Kover, Lisbon, Portugal
How is Transsiberian not on this list? and high school musical 3 is.
Cory, Portland, USA
The Wave must be a remake, I watched an American film with the same name and the same plot back when I was in school.. must be 15 years ago now. Still, the look on the students faces at the end when they realise how easily they fell for it all is pretty good.
Emma, Westport, Ireland
I don't know about Batman being the movie of 2008 I din't much care for the love interest being blown up two thirds of the way through the film. However, Heath Ledger's performance waws amazing, there's a whole backstory to that character and you get to glimpse flashes of it through his performance.
Stephanie, London, England
95 films of equal merit ?
Hardly discerning is it ..
keith rance, london ,
How on Earth did Kenny make this list. Not saying its not deserving of a spot in a list of some sort, but I remember watching it back when I was in Australia at least 2 years ago. Maybe it should be called. 'The top 100 movies I got round to watching in 2008'!
Jason Marchant, London,
No matter what film wins the Oscar for Best Picture in February 2009, The Dark Knight will always be the movie of 2008. So, when the Blu-ray shows up in my mailbox on the last day of a long week you bet it was a treat. Offered in a 2-disc set, including a third disc with a digital copy of the film,
nel jones, newyork, US
Agree, '100 best movies' a year will contain a great deal of low qualities productions.
Yann, Butrys sur Oise, France
Seriously? Indian Jones and the kingdom of crystal skull? And quarantine? and where the hell is Slumdog Millionaire. It was seriously one of the best movies of 2008. While your list has some good movies, it also has lot of glaringly mediocre movies. And you missed some good ones.
Kumar, San Mateo, USA
why not just call this list "100 movies that came out this year"?
Its a pretty drab list and completely useless for assistance.
marvin, panguitch, america
