A malfunction on the official Golden Globes website accidently declared Anne Hathaway to be the winner of the best actress gong 72-hours before the awards ceremony.
Organisers have refused to comment on the error and it is unclear whether the blunder has genuinely revealed the result in the best actress in a drama category.
Hathaway claimed today that she was trying to ignore the revelation. “I think it was just a glitch,” she told Access, a US gossip website. "I don’t really read into it and I don’t think anyone else should.”
The actress is nominated for her role in Rachel Getting Married and is in contention alongside Kate Winslet, who has won critical plaudits for her part in Revolutionary Road.
The Golden Globes are traditionally seen as a forecast of the results of the Oscars where Hathaway is likely to once again come up against the British actress.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the awards and the website, would not comment on their 'announcement'. It is understood that a star appeared by Hathaway’s name on the list of contenders.
A key at the top of list suggests that the icon will be placed next to the names of the winners when they have been officially announced at the ceremony on Sunday. The star has now been removed.
Organisers of the Golden Globes were hoping for a hitch-free ceremony this year after last year’s event had to be cancelled at late notice due to the strike by Hollywood writers, who vowed to picket the venue if it aired.
“Last year was not a happy time to go through,” Barry Adelman, the executive producer said. “But we’re putting that behind us.”
“We’re making this year bigger and better than ever,” he said.
