When it comes to picking winners, The Sunday Times Magazine has been an indispensable form guide. In 1996 The Sunday Times Magazine hailed Kate Winslet as “the acting discovery of the year”. She has since won numerous awards, including a Bafta for her best supporting role in Sense and Sensibility, and two Golden Globes earlier this month — for best actress in Revolutionary Road and best supporting actress in The Reader.
Jude Law had only a few films to his name when we featured him in 1998. Things soon changed. His portrayal of Dickie in The Talented Mr Ripley won him an Oscar nomination and a Bafta. Several Hollywood films followed, while his personal life became a tabloid favourite. He is now filming Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, in which he plays Dr Watson.
In 2001 we named Keira Knightley as one to watch. Eight years on, she is a Hollywood star.
Our class of 2007 also graduated with distinction; among them Toby Jones (top, second right), whose portrayal of Truman Capote rivalled that of the Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman; Michael Sheen (top left), now seen as a young David Frost in Frost/Nixon, and Alice Eve, was cast opposite Sean Penn in Crossing Over; Jodi Whittaker (top, second left) was nominated for best newcomer for her role in the 2007 Oscar contender Venus, opposite Peter O’Toole.
