Full coverage of the Baftas I The Baftas as it happened I Video: autograph hunter Rob on the red carpet
21:59 Jonathan Ross concludes tonight's ceremony by saying "it's been a fantastic year for film", and makes one of his few funny jokes of the night, telling viewers they can switch to BBC Four "for live coverage of Bafta, the de-rig". Enough already I think. Quite a bit of emotion tonight. Thanks for reading. See you for the Oscars.
21:58 Ron Howard leads the standing ovation for Terry Gilliam: "Standing up is just not fair", says the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas director. "I'm amazed to be humbled by a piece of metal. I'm worried that Bafta will take it away when they realise I'm not who they think I am. Maggie, Holly, Amy and Harry, thank you for letting me make your life a living hell when I'm working. And even worse when I'm not. So tonight I'd really like to thank the little people [pulls out six foot scroll - television coverage cuts]...
21:50 The last gong of the night is the Fellowship Award, which goes to the mercurial and miraculous living legend Terry Gilliam. The Monty Python animator is wearing a Soviet Military Medal around his neck that he apparently bought in a Moscow market for the equivalent of 15 pence. Or so he claimed earlier on the red carpet.
21:48 And this year the Bafta for Best Film goes to...
Slumdog Millionire! Huge cheers. Producer Christian Colson accepts the award and thanks Film Four, Pathe and Fox Searchlight. "I'd like to acknowledge the blood, sweat and tears of our cast. The film you saw is the film Danny Boyle imagined and it's very rare you can say that. He dreamed the dream, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for two and a half years. I'd like to share this award with the people of Mumbai."
So Slumdog Millionaire ends with seven awards, for outstanding film, director, adapted screenplay, music, cinematography, editing and sound: a richly deserved haul.
21:44 Sir Mick also jokes about the swearing, telling the audience: "You thought Jonathan was going to do all the f****** and Mickey did it." That's Mick on the naughty step too.
21:42 After two beeps (sorry, missed the other one I was laughing so much), Jonathan Ross says Mickey will now be suspended for three months.
And now Sir Mick Jagger is on stage presenting Best Film and promising Sir Anthony Hopkins in the studio recording with Amy Winehouse: "And we're all hoping that next week Sir Brad and the rest of the Pitt family will be performing in Sound of Music." I'm a bit lost...
21:39 Now we're onto Leading Actor. Brad Pitt looks nervous. Will Brangelina leave with nothing? Drumroll... YES! The first big surprise of the night, as Mickey Rourke takes the Bafta for his devastatingly torturous comeback performance in The Wrestler: "it's a beautiful statue. Thank you Darren Aronofsky who gave me a second chance after I'd f***ed up my career for 15 years. Such a pleasure to be here, and be out of the darkness. And thank you Marisa Tomei for being brave enough to take your clothes off all time. [aside...] I liked looking at her. I'd like to dedicated this to the great Richard Harris. Thank you very much."
21:35 Leading Actress, and no surprises: it's Kate Winslett. A bigger surprise, no tears or obvious emotion: "Thank you very, very much. To get this award at home, this really means a great deal to me. Thank you Bafta.Thank you Mum and Dad for your support. I want to thank Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack. You are much missed today, and you will be much missed for years to come." Who could disagree with that? An otherwise rather bland speech just when we were looking for some entertainment: this is the entertainment industry right? Where's Wossy?
