Dumbo’s Mum
It’s pretty obvious this one. Just picture her rocking baby Dumbo in her trunk.
Marge Simpson
While we’re going cartoon: bad hair, good mum.
Debra Winger and Shirley Maclean in Terms of Endearment
I think it’s the best film. But lots of men hate it because it’s sad.
— Musicians
Freddie Mercury
I wish I’d been to see him. There’s nobody that compares anymore. He was just
so out there on his own level.
Teenage Fanclub
They’re still doing bits and bobs. Dougie [Payne, her husband, bassist with
Travis] and I are friends with them. They played Your Love is the Place
Where I Come From at our wedding, which is such a lovely tune. Plus I’ve got
a crush on Norman. Dougie doesn’t seem to mind. Weirdly, they were Kurt
Cobain’s favourite band.
T-Rex
Dougie always has his iPod on in the background and every time Bolan at the
Beeb comes on I always say: “Who’s this?” So he eventually said: “Do you
know that you really like T-Rex?”
Nirvana
I’ve started listening to Nirvana in the car. I missed that whole scene first
time around — sometimes things are so talked about I switch off. I recommend
The Best of — I’m not like a boy with album titles. I’m a “vagueist”.
Beyoncé
I got obsessed with that song All the Single Ladies recently. Have you seen
the video? It’s sort of obscene but she’s amazing. It just makes you want to
be able to do that silly dance on your own in the kitchen.
— Children’s Books
Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman
I’ve got a baby and frankly he gets far too many stories before bed. This is
his favourite. It’s about a bear in a cave and all these little animals are
coming in out of the winter weather. I do voices!
Noddy Gets in to Trouble by Enid Blyton
A favourite of mine when I was little. I say “favourite” but I would cry at
the end because it’s quite an emotional story. When Noddy goes to jail he’s
such a kind boy that he gives his last crust to the little mouse in the cell.
The Rabbits’ Wedding by Garth Williams
It’s about two rabbits that get married. My mum says that it was my favourite
ever.
The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton
I was a bit scared of it to be honest. I found the characters to be quite
scary. There was a Saucepan Man that just seemed a bit out of control.
Naughty Amelia Jane by Enid Blyton
I thought she was a wee doll but she was a girl. She was like a psychopath.
The Silver Crown by Robert C. O’Brien
When I was a bit older this was my favourite. This girl gets a mysterious
crown for her birthday and uses it to fight evil. It was a fantasy — a bit
like Skellig.
— Family films
Flash Gordon (1980)
Just superb and Brian Blessed’s in it. And Queen on the soundtrack!
Back to the Future (1985)
That’s my era. Altogether now, “McFlyyyyyyy!”
The Incredibles (2004)
Just brilliant, a perfect film.
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
It didn’t do what it was supposed to do at the box office but I watched it on
DVD and I think it’s beautiful. Meryl Streep’s hilarious in it.
Indiana Jones (1981 onwards)
All of them. Except part four. You’d have to be in a coma not to find
something entertaining about it. From beginning to end there’s just so much
going on — and it’s quite scary as well.
