Peter Rogers, producer of the Carry On films and purveyor of double entendres, has died at the age of 95.
He passed away at home in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire yesterday after a brief illness, Pinewood Studios announced today.
Having produced all 31 of the innuendo-filled Carry On films, starting in 1958, Rogers had been keen to revive the series by making a 32nd film, Carry On London, before he died.
He continued going to the Pinewood Studios office to work on the film, undetterred by 1992 revival flop Carry on Columbus, until earlier this year.
Today, stars of the classic British movies and executives at Pinewood Studios, where he spent most of his seven-decade-long career, paid tribute.
Leslie Philips, 84, who starred in three of the early Carry On films as well as the 1990s revival, said he was an “amazing” man despite his tough approach to actors' salaries.
“He was 95 but he looked as though he was going to go on until [he was] 210 - he was an amazing man. We did have a wonderful time in those days but we weren’t paid wonderful money,” he said.
Philips said that despite wage disputes, Rogers was well respected by the Carry On actors, who included Barbara Windsor, Sid James, Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques.
“People that I knew and worked with him, they all loved him in spite of all that.
The actor, who remained in contact with Rogers and his producer wife, Betty Box, who died in 1999, said he had fond memories of their relationship.
“I can afford to say I loved Peter. I was very fond of him and his wife.”
Ivan Dunleavy, the chief executive of Pinewood Shepperton, said: “He was an institution at the film studios and a prolific film producer. He is going to be very sadly missed.”
Dunleavy said the producer’s Carry On films, which continued to do well through the 1960s and 1970s, would be a “part of British culture forever”.
The film historian Morris Bright also paid tribute to his close friend.
“Peter Rogers was a gentleman who was responsible for bringing joy and laughter to millions of people across the world through his many films but primarily through his Carry On films - the long-running series of comedies with saucy, seaside humour which to this very day still have a huge cult following.
“He leaves behind a legacy of laughter that is unrivalled and his contribution to British cinema is long and illustrious.
Bright, who co-wrote Rogers’s biography, said the film industry had suffered a great loss.
“This is a sad day for British cinema. He will be greatly missed by both showbusiness colleagues and by family and friends.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
