Awesome: I F*****’ Shot That

The mad idea of Adam Yauch (aka Nathaniel Hornblower) to document a live concert experience by handing out 50 digital cameras to fans of the Beastie Boys was utterly doomed from the moment the thought popped into his head. Awesome: I F*****’ Shot That is an epileptic account of a Madison Square Garden performance by the band on October 9, 2004. It’s shot almost entirely by crazed members of the audience who were given licence to film anything that took their fancy. Frankly, Hornblower would have got more interesting footage if he strapped his cameras to a flock of Highland sheep.

The film is unwatchable. Not just because there is barely a frame in focus. The stroboscopic editing triggers migraine, and the music is appalling. The Beastie Boys are tuneless white rappers who scratched rude records in the 1980s and died the moment they hit the mainstream. If this crappy digital lark spices up their legacy I’m going to film my belly button and sell it to the Tate.
