NOTHING SEEMS more quintessentially British than Charles Dickens. However, the latest film adaptation of Oliver Twist, to be directed by Roman Polanski with Barney Clark in the title role and Ben Kingsley as Fagin, will be shot entirely in the Czech Republic, starting in July.

No doubt the location decision has everything to do with co-production agreements and Prague’s period-looking locations. Or could it be to do with the fact that Polanski does not travel to Britain for fear of extradition to the US to face sentencing for a statutory-rape conviction brought against him in 1977?

ANGELINA JOLIE is clearly a clean-living sort of girl. Why else would she ask to try out some towels in a changing room at Los Angeles’ Macy’s department store? Apparently, she needed the privacy “to rub them against my body to feel if they are soft enough”.

TWO LEFTIE film-makers visiting the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival managed to run up a $500 extras bill at their hotel. They refused to pay, even though the cash-strapped festival had stumped up for their accommodation and flights from North America. Given how cheap things are in Argentina, S&H can only wonder how many of those tiny bottles of brandy they got through.
