Bollywood’s expansion into non-traditional markets continues with the Prague ‘Festival of Bollywood Film’ which takes place in the Czech capital from October 6-12. Now in its sixth year, this year’s event will showcase over 40 diverse films.
Fans of the ‘King Khan’ Shah Rukh can catch his blockbuster Om Shanti Om (October 9) whilst Aamir Khan devotees can dip into his Rang de Basanti (October 11). Additionally, there will be a focus on more meaningful Indian cinema as this year’s event is themed ‘India Reality…?’ and aims to portray life as it is in the ‘real’ India.
Other events planned include a reception by the Indian High Commission, a Bollywood themed party with music by the Munich Masala DJs from Germany, panel discussions and ample servings of curry. Special guest at this year’s event will be actor Kabir Bedi who is huge in the Czech Republic following the screening of his hit Italian TV series Sandokan.
Why is Bollywood big in Prague? Sangita Shresthova, the festival’s programme director explains: “Contrary to most South Asian events in other European countries, our audience is predominately Czech. Many come to experience something different, for a tinge of escapism or curiosity.” Bollywood’s profile may have also been raised by the fact that the Czech hottie Yana Gupta (born Jana Synkova) is currently a much in demand ‘item’ dance girl in Hindi and Indian regional cinema.
