Part music DVD, part pop makeover show, this collection of promo clips shows how OutKast’s continuing sonic reinvention has been matched by a sartorial evolution no less startling. These videos, little seen in the UK, trace the Atlanta duo’s journey from small-time rap group to globe-straddling, genre-mangling funky superheroes.
In the video for their first single, Player’s Ball, Antwan “Big Boi” Patton and Andre “3000” Benjamin are regulation hood rappers — all baggy sportswear and braids. But in Elevators, three years later, they’re roaming through the jungle dressed in radiation suits. By the time the Ms. Jackson promo put them in a decrepit tin shack, Patton repairing the roof in a yellow cagoule and sou’wester while Benjamin scurries about inside keeping the puppies and kittens dry, their distance from their contemporaries could hardly have been greater.
The flamboyant and debonair Andre is often the focus: B.O.B.’s psychedelic road movie has him stripped to the waist, running over blue grass under green skies, while the big top freak show that accompanies the postSeptember 11 drunken blues of The Whole World has him in voodoo skull make-up and a harlequin shirt with collars bigger than his head. The hilarious clip for the current mega-hit Hey Ya! features him as an entire band, including a nerdy keyboard player called Benjamin Andre and three backing singers dressed as jockeys. But Patton is not to be outdone, as he visits an auto workshop staffed by voluptuous lapdancing grease monkeys in the Monty Python-esque The Way You Move.
The absence of extras and mystifying lack of material from the 1998 album Aquemini — crucial to the band’s musical and visual growth — is a disappointment. Still, what’s here is evidence enough that OutKast have been, and are set to remain, as potent a force in music video as they are in music itself.
