Stone’s 9/11 epic is an old- fashioned, heartstring-pulling melodrama. It traces the ordeal of real-life New York Port Authority cops John McLoughlin (Cage) and Will Jimeno (Peña) trapped in the rubble of the twin towers, their families’ anguish and the tireless efforts of their rescuers.

In a hushed tone, the director’s track details the respectful, apolitical intentions and challenges in making the film, but nothing on screen is as compelling as the moving commentary by the real Jimeno and his rescuers. While the stark United 93 was for people still angry about 9/11, Stone’s film and extras are for those seeking recovery and a belief in the strength of the American spirit.
