Francis Whitman (Owen Wilson) and brothers Peter (Adrien Brody) and Jack
(Jason Schwartzman) are travelling on a train through India. Francis tries
to persuade his brothers to bond with each other. “That’s unusual,” remarks
Olly. “With us it’s two brothers who join up to cajole the other into doing
something he doesn’t want to do.”
8:15min
Francis asks his brothers if they have spoken to their estranged mother. Tom
says: “I don’t speak to our mother as much as I should because I ask my
brothers if they’ve spoken to her and they tell me what’s going on. We all
do it.”
11:15min
The brothers row over a food order. “Brothers always argue over who has the
best or the most,” admits Dominic. “There’s always a power struggle, but the
power shifts around depending on the situation.”
18:54min
Jack has sex with the train stewardess and his siblings guess immediately. “We
always know what is going on in each other’s heads,” asserts Dominic. “I was
just thinking that,” Olly agrees. “And I knew you’d say that,” Tom adds.
33:06min
The brothers Whitman go to sleep at the same time. “Well, that’s not right,”
says Olly. “There’s always one who doesn’t want to sleep – if only to be a
pain.”
36:06min
The brothers have a heart-to-heart. “Male siblings are always straight up with
each other,” insists Tom. “You’ve seen and heard it all so nothing shocks
you.”
39:25min
A fight breaks out between Francis and Peter. “Fights are inevitable,” Tom
confirms. “I once tried to break up a fight between my brothers, but they
got annoyed and attacked me instead.”
42:18min
The brothers get thrown off the train and throw stones at the windows. “No
matter how much we argue we always get together to fight a common enemy,”
says Dominic. “In school, the bigger boys left us alone because if you
fought one of us you fought us all.”
66:04min
The brothers share a bed. “I could never share a bed with Olly. He wriggles
all over the place,” frowns Tom. “And you take all the bed sheets,” retorts
Olly. “And you both snore,” replies Dominic.
84:12min
Jack and Peter give Francis their passports for safe keeping. “That’s a great
ending,” smiles Dom.
VERDICT
All three loved the film. “The brotherly dynamic was exactly right,” said Tom. “I’d love to watch it again,” agreed Olly. “But without these two talking all the time.”
