Its subversive lurching between comedy and violence inspired a generation of directorial young guns. Its couple-on-the-run format begat imitators from Natural Born Killers to Thelma & Louise. And its use of bluegrass music for its car chases became a cinematic staple.
Forty years after it first appeared, this taboo-mangling dramatisation of the Depression-era exploits of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker (“We rob banks”) still looms large. Beatty and Dunaway are the prettiest pair of hoodlums you could wish for, there are early roles for the two Genes, Hackman and Wilder, and Penn directs with the iconoclastic chutzpah of a Truffaut or a Godard.
