The idea of a “beyond-the-grave” rom-com is never very inspiring. After a young woman (Swank) is left widowed, she discovers that her husband (Butler) has left her letters to ease her grief and guide her into beginning a new life. Yes, it’s predictable, maudlin and the jokes are awkward.

The surprise is that Swank’s doleful widow creeps up on you, and you will feel her loss more sharply than you expect. The trouble is that once you have felt it, the story is spent and all that is left is flat, sub-Phoebe-standard comedy from Kudrow, continued grief and a saccharine ending.

The extra features include a further weird attempt at comedy with a short film about the game “snaps”, which features in the film, and various deleted scenes.
