Interview by Ed Potton
Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton
3:01min
Hoody-clad kids slip out of a West London rave and hold up a passing car. “You
get psychos like that,” says Tim Barnard. “Every rave you go to there’ll be
one lunatic who messes it up for everyone.”
8:17min
The street slang is spot-on, according to Tim: “If [writer-director] Noel
Clarke didn’t live in the environment, it would never be like that.
Spielberg could never do it, Will Smith would struggle to talk like that.”
Aaron Jones agrees: “Some films go too far with all the slang, but this
sticks true to how it is.”
14:38min
We meet a gang whose only white member is the most vocally aggressive. “There
is always a white guy in a group of black guys, who acts the same way as
them,” nods Tim. “And that person often feels like he has something to
prove,” Aaron adds.
22:39min
Moony (Femi Oyeniran) has become a more placid character after enrolling at
university. “People do change if you mix them up with the right sort of
crowd,” Tim says. “A friend of mine used to wear caps and look mean all the
time. He went to university and his dress sense started changing.”
49:22min
Our panel are generally impressed with the clothes, although Jason Scott
thinks one kid’s Evisu jeans are “a bit 1990s”.
66:55min
The gang are sent to kill the recently released convict Sam (Clarke) but pick
the wrong man. “That doesn’t make sense,” Aaron insists. “There’s no way I’m
going to kill someone and I don’t know who it is.”
82:17min
Sam is cornered in a house as the police close in slowly. “That’s nonsense –
there’d be a policeman in every room within 30 seconds, kicking the door
down,” Tim insists.
83:29min
After squeezing out of a window, Sam bursts past a pair of policemen. Jason
shakes his head: “You’re not going to get away like that, with police
surrounding the area, and choppers.” Aaron disgrees: “I’ve got away from
choppers before, bruv.”
83:48min
Sam discards his clothes, puts on new ones, and melts into a crowd. Aaron
nods: “Bin it, new clothes on, they’re looking for someone else.”
VERDICT
Teenage pregnancy should have featured more and there were some small inaccuracies, but our panel thinks the film is otherwise spot-on in its depiction of West London youth. “That’s exactly how it goes down,” says Aaron. “When we’re in our forties, we’ll look back on it like people today look at Boyz n the Hood,” sums up Tim.
