Interview by Chris Sullivan
Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton
Episode 1
1:28min
We are on the set of the film MedellÍn. Its star Vincent Chase
(Adrian Grenier) and his entourage talk on camera. “This is based on real
people,” explains the producer Peter Martin. “Vincent is Mark Wahlberg. His
brother, Johnny ‘Drama’ Chase [Kevin Dillon], is based on his cousin Johnny
‘Drama’ Alves – the same goes for the whole gang. Wahlberg pulled in his old
school pals from Queens and gave them a job.”
3:12min
The boys exchange banter. “A lot of stars have a paid entourage made up of
their old mates – some of whom might get them girls, or just be drinking
partners,” Martin says. “Russell Crowe has his Aussie mates as personal
managers and they’re worse than him.”
15:00min
The crew shoot a nude scene. “There’s always endless discussion over nude
scenes,” chuckles Jimi Mistry, the star of East is East and The
Guru. “The actress always wants them to be justified, but not me . . .
I’ll get my kit off any time.”
24:19min
The director Billy Walsh (Rhys Coiro) stays up all night and rewrites the
script. “No matter what is written before, a lot of it goes out the window
when you’re on set,” Mistry says.
Episode 10
5:43min
The cast of MedellÍn go to Cannes. Vincent’s abrasive agent, Ari
Gold (Jeremy Piven), orders a pancake. “He’s from LA and he wouldn’t have
ordered that without requests for at least low fat, no wheat and
gluten-free,” observes the casting director Francesca Greene.
8:49min
An investor offers the gang $35 million for MedellÍn without
seeing it. “I wish it was as easy as that,” groans the film director Paris
Leonti.
13:26min
In his Hollywood mansion the film producer Nicky Rubenstein (Adam Goldberg)
swears at a mobile phone while two prostitutes snort cocaine off each
other’s breasts. “He is the most believable character in the whole show,”
Mistry roars.
28:58min
The film is a turkey. The crowd boo and walk out. “The worst Cannes premiere I
ever saw was The Brown Bunny,” Martin recalls. “It was booed so
badly that the star and director Vincent Gallo apologised for making such a
bad film.”
VERDICT
“It was a bit farfetched but rang true in parts and was very watchable,” Leonte says. “It wasn’t satirical enough for me, it could have been a lot tougher,” Greene says. “I loved it,” Mistry says. “It was like the film business on Ecstasy. I thoroughly recommend it.”
