By paying close attention to historical accuracy, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 stood out in the crowded genre of Second World War combat games. This follow-up has Cherbourg taking centre stage in events that run concurrently with the original saga. The French port became pivotal to the success of the Allies’ missions since it provided a vital link with Britain. Not only did it keep supplies flowing, it was also the main artery inland for British, American and Canadian troops arriving in France.
Earned in Blood introduces players to the carrot-top Sgt Joe “Red” Hartsock who, with his small company, must secure Cherbourg at all costs. The single-player campaign pans out across 15 days from June 6, 1944. The missions break down this challenge into a series of easily digested chunks — one minute securing churches, the next picking off German convoys. The first-person caper is satisfyingly immersive thanks to some outstanding graphical touches — heavy rain splatters neatly on Jeeps and we can even see Red’s freckles in close-up. All this detail is demanding, so you will need a fairly powerful PC to prevent the visuals from occasionally chugging.
New vehicles and weapons include the M10 Wolverine tank destroyer and an M3 grease gun, while both the sound effects and the voice acting is top notch. The game earns its 16+ rating because of some strong language rather than excessive violence. Online players, meanwhile, can take part in a host of extra missions.
