Another year, another Fifa and the annual reopening of the can of worms labelled “Fifa v Pro Evolution Soccer”. Konami’s Pro-Ev scoops plaudits for its fluid on-pitch action, while EA’s Fifa storms it on authenticity, thanks to a licensing deal that encompasses 21 leagues with 10,000 world-class players.

Fifa 06 adds a few new tricks to the franchise. Shielding, tackling and dribbling have been boosted for better on-pitch control, while business in the boardroom looms with a more comprehensive management game and careers judged over a 15-year span.

Executive decisions range from controlling tight budgets to spotting fledgeling talent on the transfer market, along with managing a small but loyal staff and deciding match tactics. Also introduced is the new Football Frankenstein idea, whereby players can build their own perfect player from scratch.

So, Pro-Ev or Fifa? In my experience, older players tend to opt for the former, with younger button-pushers happier with Fifa. Either way, the fact that there are two football games of this quality in the first place is enough to gladden the heart.
