When the fifth and final season (released separately) of this sparkling legal drama finished, it left a hole that remains unfilled. On the face of it, it’s a formulaic show that British television didn’t really bother with. But behind the viewer-friendly structure — one ridiculous case, one serious case per week — lurks a vibrant intelligence, and as tender an exploration of male friendship as you will see. For this is really a love story, between the liberal idealist Alan Shore (James Spader) and the septuagenarian womaniser Denny Crane (William Shatner), whose friendship survives everything from dressing up as ducks to an irrational fear of clowns. The show suffers from unexplained cast changes, but Spader and Shatner are such a joy that it barely matters.
