This semi-fictional biopic of Jane Austen is a charming and spirited period piece, with Hathaway silencing the detractors who complained about the casting of an American as Jane.
Her Austen might be a doe-eyed beauty, but she is armed with an acid wit that makes her an uncertain commodity on the all-important marriage market.
Objecting to being paraded before her suitors “like a brood mare”, Jane stages the ultimate in 18th-century rebellion and falls in love with a penniless Irishman (McAvoy). Based on the scholarly biography by Jon Spence, which persuasively argues that Austen did indeed fall for Tom Lefroy, the film embellishes and imagines their encounters. It also playfully expands on the book’s thesis that the affair informed all of her later work.
