Hammer’s 1958 account of the blood-sucking Transylvanian is back in cinemas, in a restored print, from Wednesday (which is, of course, Hallowe’en). You would naturally expect it to have dated, but you might still be surprised by just how old-fashioned it is in places. When Dracula (Christopher Lee) goes speeding through a border crossing in his horse-drawn carriage, there’s an antique comedy moment in which a doddery guard shakes his fist at the dangerous driver. If you’re after a film that will scare the bejesus out of you, look elsewhere. The main attraction here is Hammer’s lovable cod-gothic style. The sets are done up in cheap Victoriana and have windows that reveal misty, purple-blue night skies. The flowing blood could be used to paint postboxes. And there is plenty of sauciness. Lee’s Dracula is a particularly handsome devil, and his victims are mainly young women in low-cut dresses, who, being enslaved to his will, lie back and gasp excitedly while he feasts on them.
