Lee returns as Hsiao in the second of Tsai’s films to be released this week to play two roles in this enigmatic and hauntingly beautiful love triangle. One is the paralysed patient who is cared for by a disgruntled waitress; the other is a Chinese immigrant who is badly beaten but rescued by a group of Bengali labourers. One of these men cares for him tenderly, nursing him back to life and helping with the indignities of an invalid’s daily existence. Into this insular world reappears Chyi (Chen) as a waitress whose has feelings for Hsiao.

There is very little dialogue used to communicate the tensions between the three main characters, but the dreamlike twilight created by the atmospheric photography is more eloquent than any words spoken.
