Cocaine Cowboys is a hair-raising documentary by Billy Corben about the tidal wave of cocaine that swamped Miami in the Seventies and Eighties. His access to crime lords, hit men and drug dealers is frightening. This is a who’s who of villains, a Hogarthian gallery of crooks from the MedellÍn cartel in Colombia to the pilot who flew the dope into Miami.
The haystacks of cash and coke are laughably insane – as is the head-count: thousands of people were gunned to death. This is the only state in the world where Scarface might raise a smile.

It's a shame that this review really doesn't do the film justice. This documentary really is an eye-opening look at how the South Florida cocaine trade began. It touches all aspects, such as the money and flashiness, but then delivers the sobering punch line on the violence that accompanied it. Really you don't smile at the "Scarface" of the movie (who shows women can be even deadlier then men), but you have to admire the ingenuity of the pilot and main contact who moved the cocaine itself. Their execution was flawless and this story is one that needs to be told.
Obviously James Christopher's bias against the movie Scarface got in the way of an objective review of this documentary.
