Silent Light
The kind of film favoured by those who are basically disdainful of movies, this numbingly slow, painfully long feature by the Mexican director Carlos Reygadas is set in an obscure religious community near Chihuahua, and gently (very gently) probes the drama caused by an illicit love affair. Johan (Cornelio Wall Fehr) finds himself torn between a strict duty to his wife and family, and his love for Marianne (Maria Pankratz). The characters have stilted conversations that bear little relation to the known world, and each of the shots (some of which are nicely composed) is held at least three times longer than necessary.
